Rube Goldberg Mechanics and Guidelines
Rube Goldberg Mechanics and Guidelines
An event entitled “Rube-athon: CE-nergy Flow - A Chain Reaction to Sustainability” will be spearheaded by the
Unitec Pipes Mfg. Corp to be assisted by the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers of Student Chapter - NU
Laguna. This event is a competition regarding the Rube Goldberg Machine in which the group members must have
a starting point and ending point using 0.5-inch-diameter pipes from Unitec Pipes Mfg. Corp. Participants will come
from different participating teams from other NU branches and from Laguna universities that offer the degree program
BS Civil Engineering.
OBJECTIVES
Participants must design and build a Rube Goldberg machine using recycled materials that completes a chain
reaction to pop a balloon at the endpoint. The machine must function within a 3ft x 3ft (9 sq. ft.) space, with the
starting point at 3 feet high. The main material for the machine is Unitec pipes with a diameter of 0.5 inches and a
length of 1-foot. The Rube Goldberg machine-making competition spearheaded by the civil engineering student
organization aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 4: Quality Education is supported
as the event fosters creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning in engineering and STEM. SDG 9: Industry,
Innovation, and Infrastructure is reflected in the promotion of innovative thinking and engineering skills crucial for
future infrastructure development. If the competition encourages sustainable designs, it also aligns with SDG 11:
Sustainable Cities and Communities by promoting eco-friendly and efficient systems. Additionally, using recycled
materials or minimizing waste ties into SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Lastly, SDG 17:
Partnerships for the Goals is evident if the event involves collaboration between students, industry professionals,
and educators, strengthening innovation and knowledge-sharing. Through this competition, participants engage in
an educational and sustainability-driven initiative highlighting engineering's role in solving real-world challenges.

MATERIALS AMOUNT
Dominoes
The amount may vary depending on
the participants’ plan.
Provided by 3pcs
Unitec Pipes
PICESCNUL
(0.5 diameter, 1ft)
Needles 2pcs
Jollen/Marble 1pc
2. Starting Mechanism
- A jollen (marble) must be placed at the starting point using a disposable spoon by a participant.
4. Reaction Requirements
- The Rube Goldberg machine must contain exactly 5 reactions.
- A reaction is defined as any action that triggers another action (e.g., domino effect, pendulum, rolling, falling,
flipping, etc.).
5. Ending Point
- The final reaction must pop a balloon using a needle provided by the facilitator.
- The official balloon will contain cut colored paper inside as proof of a successful pop.
6. Judging Attempts
- Each team is given 3 attempts to successfully complete their Rube Goldberg machine.
- If the machine fails, teams may reset within 1 minute before trying again.
- Teams will have 3 hours to assemble and test their machine before the official judging round
