Undefined & Defined Terms

This document is a detailed lesson plan for an 8th-grade mathematics class focusing on the axiomatic structure of geometry. The lesson includes objectives, content, learning resources, and various activities designed to help students understand undefined and defined terms in geometry. It also outlines procedures for motivation, analysis, abstraction, and assignments to reinforce learning.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Motivation/ Preliminary Good morning class!
Activity
Please arrange your seats and pick up the pieces of dirt under your chairs.

Please all stand and let’s pray.

(Call one student to lead the prayer).

You may take your sit.

(Checking of attendance).

Now, are you ready to learn our new lesson for this morning?

So let’s start!

ACTIVITY 1: FIX ME!!!

Direction: Arrange the jumbled letters to form a basic geometric word.

1. T IOPN 6. ONDPTIIM
2. NLIE 7. EINL GEEMSSNT
3. LPAEN 8. YRA
4. TRYMEOGE 9. URNETNGOC GLNAES
5. MATHCALTIMA ESTEMSY 10. WEETEBSSENN

ACTIVITY 2: SPOT ME!

Direction: Look around you and list all the objects that resemble a POINT,
LINE, & PLANE.

Example:
(Let the students take a guess about the illustrations.)

ACTIVITY 3: GUESS ME?

Direction: Guess the name of the given illustrations inside the box.

B. Analysis

POINTS W, X, Y, &
SEGMENT XY RAY XY
Z LIE ON THE
POINT A
PLANE Z SAME PLANE

POINT Y IS THE TWO OPPOSITE

MIDPOINT OF YZ RAYS: YX & YZ

C. Abstraction
UNDEFINED & DEFINED TERMS

 POINT- it has no dimension (thickness, length, and width). It is also

represented by a dot. Thus, a point is named with a capital letter.
Example: A, B, C
 LINE- it has a length that can extend infinitely in both directions. A line is
named by a small letter or by any two points within a line.

Example: AB, CD

If line had 3 points that lies on it, then it possible to have a MIDPOINT.

A B C

In the AC , point B placed in the middle of the line segment which divides the
line into two equal parts. Point B is what we called MIDPOINT.

In the figure, AC and BD intersected at certain point X, that point is considered

as the MIDPOINT of the intersected lines.

 PLANE- it has a length and width that extends in all directions. A plane is
named by a capital letter, or by at least 3 non-collinear points.
Example:

Plane can contain POINTS, LINE SEGMENTS, or INTERSECTED LINES.

 BETWEENNESS- if Q-R-S, then QR+RS=QS

 MIDPOINT- if R is the midpoint of QS, then QR≅ RS

 RIGHT ANGLE- measures 90

 ACUTE ANGLE- measure less than 90
 OBTUSE ANGLE- measures greater than 90
 COMPLEMENTARY ANGLES- two angles measures exactly 90
 SUPPLEMENTARY ANGLES- two angles measures exactly 180
 CONGRUENT SEGMENTS- two or more line segments are equal.
 CONGRUENT ANGLES- two angles are congruent.

(Let the students think and answer each activity individually.)

ACTIVITY 4: DRAW US NOW!
Direction: Illustrate the following given.

1. Point Z
2. Line segment XY
3. Ray AB
4. Plane V
5. Point X is the midpoint of line AB
6. Line CD intersected with line EF
7. Points A, B, C, D lies on plane E
8. Midpoint R in line QS
9. Line AB and CD intersected with midpoint X and lies on plane Z
10. Ray TU and points A, B, C lies on plane V

ACTIVITY 5: LET’S NAME IT-TERMS!

Direction: Name all the possible terms you can spot inside the plane.

Undefined terms in geometry refer to basic concepts that cannot be formally

defined using other previously defined terms. Instead, they are described using
intuitive explanations, visual representations, and relatable objects. It is a
term that doesn’t require further explanation or description. Thus, it exists in its
basic form such as point, line, and plane

Point- no length, Line- infinite length Plane-infinite length &

E. Generalization/ Summary -no width, -contains infinite width
-no thickness number of points -no thickness

Defined term is a concept or idea that is explained and clarified using other
previously defined terms, axioms, or postulates. It is the building block of
geometric knowledge, and they help to establish a shared understanding and
language for geometric concepts. Examples of this are the MIDPOINT, RAY,
and ANGLES.
