Leadership in Nursing

Introduction:

Effective leadership drives revolutionary change and improves patient outcomes in

nursing. Leadership in nursing is essential, and this discourse discusses my strategy to shift my

specialty. This framework will reveal two leadership strengths and two areas where I may

enhance my ability to lead and impact change. Two key measures to improve my leadership

skills will also be listed. These initiatives will be supported by scientific sources, including a

peer-reviewed nursing journal. This comprehensive review emphasizes nurse leadership and

establishes a rational, evidence-based approach to leadership development and change

management in healthcare.

Strengths in Leadership:

Strength 1: Effective Communication Skills

Good communication is one of my nursing leadership qualities. Throughout my career, I

have worked to clearly and empathetically communicate complex medical information to

patients and colleagues. In difficult medical situations, this talent helps medical personnel

communicate with patients and make information understandable and reassuring. I improve

healthcare team understanding and cooperation via effective communication. My ability to

communicate thoughts, ideas, and concerns helps nursing teams operate together. According to

Robbins & Davidhizar (2020)’s research, good communication improves patient care. I help

patients stay safer, have better experiences, and get better treatment by communicating important

information. In addition, good communication drives healthcare reform. Through it, fresh ideas,

research, and best practices are spread. My leadership abilities will inspire and motivate my

colleagues to accept and execute change, improving care. Thus, my communication skills are
3

both a strength and a need for nursing innovation and change.

Strength 2: Empathy and Compassion

I have a strong sense of empathy and compassion, which are essential for nursing

leadership. I am driven by these traits to provide patient-centered treatment and collaborate with

other healthcare professionals. Research in the "Journal of Nursing Management" shows that

leaders who are empathetic may build trust and rapport with their employees (Bergstedt & Wei,

2020). Empathy and compassion are built into my nature, not only for work. I want patients and

coworkers to feel heard and cared for. This caring atmosphere encourages open communication,

collaborative problem-solving, and cutting-edge innovation, which drives good change. As

Bergstedt & Wei (2020) suggest, my empathy will be crucial to my leadership journey. It will

help us make personal connections with colleagues and share a purpose in our field. Our

leadership style will motivate people to accept change by building trust and understanding,

making new habits and projects more fluid and productive.

Areas of Improvement in Leadership:

Area 1: Conflict Resolution Skills

My leadership abilities require development in conflict resolution. Nursing is typically

done in high-stress conditions where tensions may rise and disputes can arise suddenly. Nursing

leaders must be skilled at conflict resolution to handle these issues without sacrificing patient

care or teamwork. According to Ronquillo, Ellis & Toney-Butler (2022), healthcare conflict

resolution is crucial. My career and personal progress depend on improving my dispute

resolution skills. I will learn how to resolve issues constructively and turn them into

opportunities for development and teamwork. Improving my conflict resolution abilities is

important for leading and influencing change. Resistance and disputes may emerge as people
4

adjust to new procedures or standards. Improved conflict resolution abilities help me overcome

these hurdles and mitigate change's challenges.

Area 2: Change Management

Given the importance of change in healthcare, I know I need to improve my change

management abilities. Navigating and leading change is essential for providing high-quality

patient care and sustaining organizational efficiency in healthcare. Research in the "Journal of

Nursing Administration" by Swinton & Haverkamp (2023). helped me better. Research

emphasises the need of systematic change management in healthcare (Swinton & Haverkamp,

2023). Taking a methodical approach to change projects may lead to more effective and durable

results.

Developing change management abilities will help me lead change projects better as I

advance in this field. I can plan, execute, and monitor changes with fewer interruptions, team

buy-in, and maximum patient care benefits with a systematic approach. Developing my change

management abilities will also help me adapt to the changing healthcare scene. Effective change

management is essential for nursing leadership, whether it's embracing new technology,

implementing evidence-based practices, or tackling rising healthcare concerns.

Priority Strategies for Improvement:

Strategy 1: Professional Development and Training

I prioritize professional growth and training to improve my conflict resolution and change

management skills. This strategy is based on Ronquillo, Ellis & Toney-Butler (2022), who found

that focused training programs may improve conflict resolution abilities. By joining these

classes, I want to improve my conflict resolution skills and create an atmosphere where disputes

are seen as opportunities for development rather than disruptions. Structured training will also
5

provide me the skills and knowledge to handle change effectively. I need to study to be at the

forefront of nursing leadership due to the changing nature of healthcare.

Strategy 2: Mentorship and Networking

I will seek mentoring from experienced nursing leaders in my speciality and join

professional nursing organizations to improve my leadership abilities. Hafsteinsdóttir et al.

(2020) show that mentoring and networking develop leadership skills. I learn from nursing

leaders who have negotiated the difficulties of leadership via these relationships. Participating in

nursing groups will also allow me to cooperate, share ideas, and learn different leadership styles.

These experiences support my goal of continuing nursing leadership growth, enabling me to

drive change and enhance our speciality.

In conclusion, nurse leadership is essential for meaningful change. Developing my

communication, empathy, and compassion abilities while improving my conflict resolution and

change management skills would help me become a more powerful nurse leader. I believe I can

improve my leadership skills via planned professional development, focused training, mentoring,

and networking. This commitment will allow me to lead substantial change in my specialty of

nursing, enhancing patient care and outcomes.
