Pedagogy: Hydrostatic Pressure Test

A hydrostatic pressure test is a procedure used to assess the strength and integrity of pressure vessels, piping, and tanks by filling them with water and pressurizing them. The test aims to ensure safety, detect leaks, verify structural integrity, and comply with regulatory standards. The procedure includes preparation, pressurization, inspection, and depressurization, following common standards such as ASME and API codes.

Hydrostatic pressure test

A hydrostatic pressure test (or simply hydro test) is a procedure

used to check the strength and integrity of pressure vessels,
piping, boilers, valves and tanks. It involves filling the system
with water or another incompressible fluid, pressurizing it above
its normal operating pressure, and inspecting for leaks or
structural weaknesses.

General Purpose of Hydrostatic Testing

1. Safety Assurance – Ensures the vessel or pipeline can withstand the

operating pressure without failure.
2. Leak Detection – Identifies cracks, weak points, or defective welds.
3. Structural Integrity – Verifies the mechanical strength of the system.
4. Regulatory Compliance – Required by standards such as ASME, API,
and EN codes.

Procedure of a Hydrostatic Test

1. Preparation
o Clean the system to remove debris.

o Close all openings except for the inlet and pressure gauge

connections.
o Fill the system completely with water (sometimes mixed with

corrosion inhibitors).
2. Pressurization
o Apply pressure gradually using a pump (typically 1.5 times the

design pressure).
o Hold the pressure for a specific duration (e.g., 10-30 minutes or

as per code requirements).

3. Inspection
o Visually inspect for leaks, deformations, or pressure drops.

o Use a calibrated pressure gauge to monitor the pressure stability.

4. Depressurization & Draining

o Slowly release the pressure.

o Drain the test fluid and dry the system to prevent corrosion.

Common Standards & Codes

• ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC)

• API 570 & API 650 (for pipelines and storage tanks)
• EN 13480 (European standard for metallic piping)
