LESSON OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 Show understanding of the roles and functions of communicators and journalists –
Identify the key tasks and responsibilities of communicators and journalists.
 Identify the settings where communicators and journalists can be found – Explore
various environments and industries where communicators and journalists operate.
 Identify career opportunities for communicators and journalists – Recognize the diverse
career paths available in the field of communication.
 Explain the values, rights, responsibilities, and accountabilities of communicators and
journalists – Understand the ethical standards, rights, and duties expected from
communication professionals.
 Distinguish between ethical and unethical behaviors among practitioners – Identify and
evaluate ethical versus unethical practices in communication.

LESSON OUTLINE:
I. INTRODUCTION (10 MINUTES)
1. Warm-Up Question:
a. Begin with a brief discussion: “What do you think the job of a communicator or
journalist entails? Can you think of examples of communicators or journalists you
follow or see in the media?”
b. Allow students to share their thoughts. Write responses on the board to guide the
conversation.
2. Overview of the Lesson:
a. Introduce the topic: “Today, we’ll explore the roles, responsibilities, career
opportunities, and ethical considerations for communicators and journalists in
today’s world.”
b. Mention the key learning objectives, which will help students understand the
importance of communication professionals in modern society.

II. LECTURE/INSTRUCTION (25 MINUTES)


A. ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATORS AND JOURNALISTS (10 MINUTES)
1. Communicators:
 Definition: A communicator is someone who transmits information to an audience
through various channels (verbal, written, visual, etc.).

 Roles:
 Public Relations (PR) Specialist: Managing communication between an
organization and its public, shaping the image of companies or individuals.
 Advertising Professional: Creating persuasive messages to promote products or
services.
 Corporate Communications Specialist: Handling internal and external
communication in an organization.
 Social Media Manager: Curating content and managing online engagement.
 Functions:
 Creating messages, crafting narratives, engaging audiences, maintaining brand
or organizational image, managing crises, etc.
2. Journalists:
 Definition: Journalists gather, write, and report news and information, typically through
print, broadcast, or online media.
 Roles:
 Reporter: Gathering information and reporting facts in a fair, unbiased manner.
 Editor: Reviewing and revising stories for clarity, accuracy, and adherence to
ethical standards.
 News Anchor: Presenting news in front of an audience, often on television or
online.
 Investigative Journalist: Conducting in-depth research and reporting on issues
that require critical analysis.
 Functions: Investigating, reporting, interviewing, writing, fact-checking, ensuring
accuracy, and maintaining objectivity.

B. SETTINGS WHERE COMMUNICATORS AND JOURNALISTS CAN BE FOUND (5 MINUTES)

1. Communication Settings:
a. Corporate Sector: Many communicators work in large corporations, helping with
internal communications and public relations efforts.
b. Nonprofits and NGOs: Communicators help advocate for social causes and
spread awareness.
c. Media Organizations: Newspapers, TV stations, radio stations, and online
platforms employ journalists.
d. Government/Public Sector: Communicators manage public affairs and engage
with citizens.
e. Freelance: Many communicators and journalists work independently, writing for
blogs, freelance reporting, or offering consulting services.
2. Industries for Journalists:
a. Broadcast Journalism: Television and radio stations.
b. Print Journalism: Newspapers and magazines.
c. Digital Journalism: Online news outlets and blogs.
d. Sports Journalism: Reporting on sports events and athletes.
e. Entertainment Journalism: Covering celebrity news, movies, music, etc.

III. GROUP ACTIVITY (15 MINUTES)


SCENARIO ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION:
1. Activity Setup:
