Numerical Question Set - Chapter: Rest

and Motion (Class 9 - CBSE)

1. A car travels 100 km in 2 hours and then another 50 km in 1 hour. What is the
average speed of the car for the entire journey?

2. A train starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 0.5 m/s² for 20 seconds.
Calculate the distance covered by the train in this time.

3. A bike is moving with a velocity of 20 m/s. It comes to a stop in 10 seconds. Find

the acceleration and the distance it travels before stopping.

4. A person walks 4 km north and then 3 km east. Calculate the total distance
travelled and the displacement.

5. The following graph shows the distance-time graph of a moving object. Describe
the type of motion represented and calculate the speed for each segment. [Provide
Graph]

6. A velocity-time graph of a car shows a straight line sloping downwards. What

does this indicate? If the velocity changes from 30 m/s to 10 m/s in 5 seconds,
calculate the acceleration.

7. Study the given distance-time graph. Identify the segments where the object is at
rest and calculate the speed during motion. [Provide Graph]

8. A velocity-time graph shows a horizontal line at 20 m/s for 10 seconds. What is

the distance travelled during this time?

9. A ball is thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of 20 m/s. Explain whether the
ball is in motion or at rest at the highest point.

10. Two friends argue: one says a car is in motion because it’s moving relative to a
tree, the other says it’s at rest because it’s stationary relative to another car. Who is
correct and why?

11. The distance-time graph of two objects A and B is given. Object A moves with
constant speed, while object B starts from rest and accelerates. At what point do
they meet, and which object is faster at the end? [Provide Graph]
12. A velocity-time graph of an object shows a line going from 0 to 20 m/s in 4
seconds, then staying constant for 6 seconds, and finally dropping back to 0 in 2
seconds. Calculate the total distance travelled.

13. Study the graph where a line curves upwards in a distance-time graph. What
kind of motion is this? Is the speed increasing or decreasing? Justify your answer.

14. In a given velocity-time graph, the object shows alternating segments of positive
and negative velocities. Interpret what kind of motion this object is undergoing and
calculate the net displacement.

15. A bus is moving at a constant speed on a straight road. A person inside the bus
throws a ball vertically upward. Describe the motion of the ball as seen by the
person inside the bus and by an observer on the road.

16. Can an object be in motion with respect to one reference point and at rest with
respect to another? Explain with examples.

17. A boy says he ran 500 meters but his displacement is zero. How is this possible?
Give a real-life example.

18. An object is said to be at rest in a moving train. Discuss the frame of reference
where this is possible.
