QUESTION ONE (30 Marks)

(a) By use of suitable examples, distinguish the following terms as used in statistics

(i) Qualitative and Quantitative measurements (3marks)


(ii) Descriptive and Inferential Statistics (3marks)
(iii) Normal and Skewed distributions (3marks)
(iv) Correlation and Regression (3marks)
i. v) Dependent Events and Independent Events (3marks)
b) Explain any 3 types of mathematical averages used in statistics (3marks)
c) The following are heights of 15 athletes in an institution: 131, 129, 130, 126, 131, 128, 129,
130, 128, 127, 130, 129, 127, 129 and 128. Calculate the standard deviation of these heights
(4marks)

d) If A and B are two independent events, show that A1 and B1 are also independent events
(4marks)

e) The following are marks for subjects A and B in a certain examination. Mean marks in
A= 39.5, mean marks in B = 47.5 standard deviation of marks in A = 10.8 and standard
deviation of marks in B = 16.8. Coefficient of correlation between marks in A and
marks in B is 0.42. Estimate the marks in B for the candidate who secured 52 marks in
A (4marks)

(a) Given the data below:

QUESTION THREE
a) Explain the term venn diagram as used in probability
(2marks)
b) In a sample of 100 students enrolling in a university, a questionnaire indicated that 45 of
them studied English, 40 studied French, 35 studied German, 20 studied both English and
French, 23 studied both English and German, 19 studied both French and German and 12
studied all the three languages.
Use a venn diagram to find the probability of the number of students:
i) who studied all three languages (2marks)
ii) who studied English and French and not German (2marks)
iii) who studied English and German and not French (2marks)
iv) who studied French and German and not English (2marks)
v) a randomly chosen student studied only one of the three languages (2marks)
c) Three light bulbs are chosen at random from fifteen bulbs of which five are defective.
Find the probability that

i) none is defective (2marks)


ii) exactly one is defective (3marks)
iii) at least one is defective (3marks)

(a) Calculate the Spearman’s Rank correlation coefficient of the data in the table below
