Question : Note Taking

🧠 1. Understand the Question Format

You’ll usually get:

• A reading passage with detailed information.

• A question that says something like:

"You are going to make some notes based on the passage you have read. Make your notes under the
following headings:"

There are 3 headings, and under each heading, you are supposed to write only short notes (NOT
full sentences), with a maximum of 4 points per heading.

📝 2. Read the Question First, Not the Text

• Look at the 3 headings carefully before reading the passage.

• This helps you know what information to focus on.

Example Headings Might Be:

1. Reasons why people recycle.

2. Bene ts of recycling.

3. Challenges of recycling.

So when reading, you’re looking for:

• Reasons (motives),

• Bene ts (positive results),

• Challenges (problems or dif culties).

📖 3. Skim and Scan the Text

• Skim the passage quickly for general understanding.

• Then scan for details related to the headings.

Use highlighters or underlining if allowed.

✂ 4. Make Brief Notes – No Full Sentences

✅ Write:

• Short phrases

• No explanations

• No linking words

• No repetition of the same idea in different words

❌ Avoid:

• Full sentences

• Examples (unless asked)

• Extra information outside the topic

Example:

Heading: Bene ts of recycling

• saves energy

• reduces land ll waste

• creates jobs

• lowers pollution

🔢 5. Follow the Word/Point Limit

• 4 points maximum per heading

• Even if you nd more, choose the clearest and most distinct ones

• Don’t repeat ideas under multiple headings

🎯 6. Use Your Own Words (Paraphrasing)

You don’t have to copy the exact wording from the passage. If you can, rephrase to show
understanding.

Example from passage:

“Recycling helps reduce the amount of garbage sent to land lls.”

Your notes might look like:

1. Physical bene ts of exercise

• builds strength

• improves heart health

• helps control weight

• boosts energy
