Virtualization Technology in Cloud Computing

What is Virtualization?
Virtualization is a technology that allows multiple virtual machines (VMs) to
run on a single physical machine by sharing its resources (CPU, memory,
storage, and network). It enables efficient resource utilization and scalability in
cloud computing.

🛠 Key Components of Virtualization:

1️) Hypervisor (Virtual Machine Monitor - VMM)

• A software layer that creates and manages VMs.

• Examples: VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM, Xen.

2️) Virtual Machines (VMs)

• Independent, software-based systems running on the same physical
hardware.
• Each VM has its own OS, applications, and resources.

3️) Host Machine

• The physical server where virtualization software runs.

4️) Guest Machine

• The virtual machines running on the host system.

🛠 How Virtualization Works?

• Host Machine – The physical computer where virtual machines

(VMs) are created.

• Guest Machine – The virtual machines running on the host machine.

• Virtualization assigns a logical name to physical resources and allows
multiple users or organizations to share them efficiently.
Types of Virtualization

• Server Virtualization – Divides a physical server into multiple VMs (e.g., AWS
EC2).
Network Virtualization – Creates virtual networks (e.g., VLANs, SDN).
Storage Virtualization – Combines multiple storage devices into a single virtual
storage unit.
Desktop Virtualization – Allows users to access a virtual desktop remotely (e.g.,
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure - VDI).

Key Characteristics of Virtualization

• Security – Virtual machines provide an isolated environment, reducing security

risks.
Resource Sharing – Multiple users can access the same physical resources.
