Persistence forecasting method assumes that the weather conditions in the near future will be
the same as they are now. For example, if it is sunny and 70°F today, the persistence method
would predict similar conditions for tomorrow. It is most appropriate for short-term forecasts
in areas where weather patterns change slowly, such as in desert regions. However, Trends
forecasting method tracks the movement and speed of weather systems to predict their future
position and effects. For example, if a storm is moving east at 30 mph, the trends method can
estimate where it will be in several hours. It is useful when tracking well-defined systems like
thunderstorms, hurricanes, or cold/warm fronts using radar and satellite imagery.
The three factors that impact temperature conditions comprise Cloud Cover, Latitude, and
Surface Type. Clouds can insulate the Earth by trapping heat, leading to warmer nights.
Conversely, during the day, clouds reflect sunlight, resulting in cooler temperatures.
Locations closer to the equator receive more direct sunlight year-round, typically
experiencing warmer temperatures than those near the poles. Whereas, Urban areas with
concrete surfaces absorb and retain more heat than rural areas, creating urban heat islands
with higher temperatures.
Reading Maps:
Looking at the temperature patterns, I think a potential cold front might be located in the
eastern part of the map, roughly extending from the northeast down towards the southwest.
There continues to be a clear temperature gradient from west to east. The western regions
show warmer, yellow and light green colors, while the eastern side exhibits cooler, darker
green hues. This distinct temperature difference across a relatively narrow zone indicates the
boundary between warmer and colder air masses. The temperature lines in the eastern part of
the map appear somewhat compressed and aligned, which is another characteristic often
associated with a frontal system.
The temperatures are generally cool, with readings in Virginia around 7°C. The forecast for
the next few days indicates a mix of conditions. For today, Thursday, May 1st, there is a mix
of sun and clouds, with temperatures ranging from 6°C to 11°C. Friday, May 2nd, shows
similar conditions. Saturday, May 3rd, and Sunday, May 4th, appear to be mostly sunny with
slightly warmer temperatures.
