MA3251 Question Paper Analysis Model 2025

The document analyzes question papers for the MA3251 Statistics and Numerical Methods course, identifying frequently repeated methods across six papers. It highlights important methods by unit, suggests study strategies to achieve a passing score, and outlines the expected question paper model for 2025. Sample questions for both 2-mark and 16-mark sections are provided to illustrate the expected format.

MA3251 - Statistics and Numerical

Methods
Question Paper Analysis & Model
(2025)
1. Repeated Methods Across Question Papers
To identify methods that appear frequently, methods from six question papers were
analyzed. Papers 2, 4, and 5 were identical, reducing the unique papers to four (Nov/Dec
2022, Apr/May 2022, Apr/May 2023, and Nov/Dec 2020 & Apr/May 2021).

Repeated 2-Mark Questions (Part A):

- Type I & II Errors, Critical Value, Degrees of Freedom – Unit I (All papers)

- ANOVA Concepts – Unit II (All papers)

- Newton-Raphson Method (Convergence), Jacobi Method – Unit III (Papers 2, 4, 5, 6)

- Trapezoidal Rule, Newton’s Divided Difference – Unit IV (All papers)

- Euler’s Method, Adams-Bashforth – Unit V (All papers)

Repeated 16-Mark Questions (Part B):

- Small Sample t-test, Chi-Square Test – Unit I (All papers)

- ANOVA (One-Way, Two-Way, Latin Square) – Unit II (All papers)

- Gauss-Seidel, Power Method – Unit III (All papers)

- Newton’s Interpolation, Simpson’s Rule – Unit IV (All papers)

- Runge-Kutta, Milne’s, Euler’s Method – Unit V (All papers)

2. Important Methods
Most Important Methods by Unit:
Unit I: t-test, Chi-Square Test, Large Sample Tests

Unit II: One-Way, Two-Way, and Latin Square ANOVA

Unit III: Gauss-Seidel, Power Method, Newton-Raphson

Unit IV: Newton’s Interpolation, Simpson’s Rule, Trapezoidal Rule

Unit V: Runge-Kutta (Fourth Order), Milne’s Method, Euler’s Methods

3. Methods to Study to Pass (45 Marks)

To pass with minimum effort (goal: 45 marks):

- Part A (2-Mark): Focus on simple definitions from Unit I, ANOVA principles (Unit II),
Newton-Raphson and Gauss-Seidel basics (Unit III), Trapezoidal Rule and Interpolation
(Unit IV), and Euler/Adams-Bashforth (Unit V). Target: 12–16 marks.

- Part B (16-Mark): Study t-test and Chi-Square from Unit I, and Runge-Kutta or Milne’s
Method from Unit V. Aim for 2 correct answers = 32 marks.

Recommended Study Methods:

- Unit I: t-test, Chi-Square

- Unit IV: Trapezoidal Rule, Newton’s Forward Interpolation

- Unit V: Runge-Kutta, Milne’s Method, Euler’s Method

4. Question Paper Model for 2025

Expected Pattern:

- Unit I: Hypothesis testing (t-tests, Chi-Square)

- Unit II: ANOVA and experimental designs

- Unit III: Iterative methods (Gauss-Seidel, Power)

- Unit IV: Interpolation, Simpson’s, Trapezoidal Rule

- Unit V: Runge-Kutta, Milne’s, Euler’s Method

2-Mark: Definitions, simple formulas, conceptual questions.

16-Mark: Calculation-based, application questions.
