Misplaced Modifiers
• General Rule: A modifier should be placed as close as possible to the word it
modifies.
• If a modifier is misplaced or dangling it may appear like it is modifying the
wrong word.
• When a modifier is misplaced the meaning of the sentence can be confusing.

Example: He told us how to cut wood through written directions.

I saw a blue heron trimming its feathers while driving past the reservoir.

First Example:
• The misplaced prepositional phrase seems to modify cut rather than told.

Second Example:
• The misplaced elliptical clause seems to modify trimming rather than saw.

Correction:
• Simply move the phrase or clause that is misplaced closer to the word that it
should be modifying.
• Some additional rewording may be necessary.

Corrected Sentences: Through written directions, he told us how to cut wood.

While driving past the reservoir, I saw a blue heron


trimming its feathers.

Other Examples:

1. Growing wild in the forest, we picked the tiny blossoms.

2. The lack attracted many birds with gentle waves.

3. Balanced on one leg, the boys stared at the flamingo.

4. Gazing upwards at the bats, the spelunkers shone their flashlights that hung by
the thousands from the roof of the cave.

5. Coming in for a landing, ground control radioed to the distressed airliner.

6. A man leaped into the water over the ship’s rail.

7. Smashed beyond repair, Rob saw his watch lying on the court.

Instructions: Correct all the misplaced modifiers by rewriting each sentence.

Example: Walking through the store, the merchandise attracted the customers.

Answer: The merchandise attracted the customers walking through the store.

2. Bob gave his cassette deck to his sister with Dolby.

3. The book won a prize with many color photos.

4. Damaged in the accident, Phil saw his car in the repair shop.

5. The books will cost thirty-five dollars that you want.

6. The man asked to see the surgeon growing restless in the hospital.

7. The bus is leaving for the city with your luggage in it.

8. The mirror reflected the view in the silver frame.

9. The room has been rented with a view of the sea.

10. We saw many art galleries driving from city to city.
