Triangle Congruence Similarity CheatSheet

The document explains the concepts of triangle congruence and similarity, highlighting the differences between them. It outlines the five laws of congruence (SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, RHS) and three laws of similarity (AA, SAS, SSS), along with memory tips for each rule. Additionally, it provides visualization tips and quick decision rules to help identify congruence and similarity in triangles.

Mastering Triangle Congruence & Similarity

First, Know the Difference

Concept Meaning

Congruence Same size and shape

Similarity Same shape, but not necessarily same size

Laws of Congruence (Triangles)

You can remember these with 3-letter codes that compare a triangles sides (S) and angles (A):

Congruence Rules (5 Total)

Rule Meaning Memory Tip

SSS Side-Side-SideAll 3 sides equal

SAS Side-Angle-Side
Two sides and the angle between them

ASA Angle-Side-Angle
Two angles and the side between

AAS Angle-Angle-Side
Two angles and any side

RHS Right-angle-Hypotenuse-Side
Only for right-angled triangles

Memory Tricks (Congruence)

- SSS = all sides match

- SAS = sandwich the angle between sides

- ASA = sandwich the side between angles

- RHS = Right angle, Hypotenuse, and one other Side

Laws of Similarity (Triangles)

Only shape must be preserved not size.

Similarity Rules (3 Total)

Rule Meaning Memory Tip

AA Angle-Angle (two
Twoangles
matching
equal)
angles = same shape

SAS Side-Angle-Side
Side
(sides
ratiosin+same
equalratio,
angle angle same)
SSS All sides in theSame
sameshape,
ratio different size

Memory Tricks (Similarity)

- AA is the easiest two angles always force the third to match

- SAS & SSS for similarity are about ratios, not equal lengths

Visualization Tip
Draw this quick diagram in your notebook or in your head:

Congruent () Similar (~)

---------------- ---------------------

SSS SSS (same ratio)

SAS SAS (same ratio)

ASA

AAS

RHS

(All equal sides/angles) (All same shape)

How to Remember Easily

Group by Type:

- Congruence = equal sides and angles

- Similarity = same angles, proportional sides

Use Mnemonics:

- "All School Students Are Always Right" AAS, SSS, SAS, ASA, RHS

- "All About Shape" For similarity (AA, SAS, SSS)

Practice with Mini-Quizzes:

- Make your own flashcards or quick sketches to quiz yourself regularly.

Quick Decision Rules

- "Do the angles match?" Possibly similar
- "Are all sides equal?" Congruent

Summary Table
Triangle Law Type What it checks

SSS CongruentAll 3 sides equal

SAS Both Two sides + included angle

ASA CongruentTwo angles + included side

AAS CongruentTwo angles + non-included side

RHS CongruentRight angle + hypotenuse + 1 side

AA Similar Two matching angles

SSS (ratio) Similar Sides in the same proportion

SAS (ratio) Similar Side-angle-side in same ratio
