Mech 303 Assignment

Section A (Fluid Mechanics)

1. The velocity profile in fully developed laminar flow in a circular pipe of inner radius R = 2 cm, in
m/s, is given by u(r) = 4(1 - r2/R2). Determine the average and maximum velocities in the pipe
and the volume flow rate. [6]

2. What fluid property is responsible for the development of the velocity boundary layer? For what
kinds of fluids will there be no velocity boundary layer in a pipe? [2]
3. In the fully developed region of flow in a circular pipe, does the velocity profile change in the
flow direction and why? [6]
4. A steady, three-dimensional velocity field is given by
V= 5 (0.657 + 1.73x + 0.948y + az) i + (2.61 + cx + 1.91y + bz) j + (-2.73x - 3.66y - 3.64z)k
Calculate constants a, b, and c such that the flow field is irrotational. [6]
5. A steady, incompressible, two-dimensional velocity field is given by

where the x- and y-coordinates are in m and the magnitude of velocity is in m/s. Determine if
there are any stagnation points in this flow field, and if so, where they are. [4]
6. From the definition of material acceleration, which is the acceleration following a fluid particle

(a) What are the primary dimensions of the gradient operator ∇ ⃗?

(b) Verify that each additive term in the equation has the same dimensions. [6]

7. Consider the following steady, two-dimensional, incompressible velocity field:

Where a is a constant. Calculate the pressure as a function of x and y. [10]
