Course Objectives:
• To familiarize the students with the foundations of probability and statistical methods
• To impart probability concepts and statistical methods in various Engineeringapplications.
Course Outcomes:
On Completion of the course, the students will be able to
CO1: Understand and represent the data collection and representation.
CO2: Understand the basics of statistical measures like central tendency and variations.
CO3: Interpret the association of characteristics through correlation and regression tools
CO4: Apply probability concepts to calculate probabilities that aid in solving engineering
problems
CO5: Infer the statistical inferential methods based on small and large sample tests
Syllabus:
UNIT –I 12h
GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION:
Definitions of Statistics, Importance of statistics, Methods of Collection of Data: Primary and
Secondary, Graphical representation of Frequency distribution (Histogram, Frequency Polygon,
Frequency Curve and Cumulative Frequency curves (Ogive curves)), Diagrammatic representations:
Simple bar, Pie diagrams.
UNIT- II 12h
MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY:
Arithmetic Mean, Median and Mode, merits, demerits and applications.
MEASURES OF DISPERSION:
Range, Mean deviation, Quartile deviation, Standard Deviation, Variance, Skewness and
Kurtosis.
UNIT-III 12h
CORRELATION AND REGRESSION:
Correlation- Definition, types of correlation, Scatter diagram, Karl Pearson correlation
coefficient and Spearman’s Rank correlation coefficient.
Regression- Definition, regression line of Y on X and regression line of X on Y and regression
coefficients.
UNIT-IV 14h
PROBABILITY THEORY AND DISTRIBUTIONS:
Basic Concepts of Probability: random variable, random experiments, trial, outcome,
sample space, event, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, equally likely and favorable
outcomes. Mathematical, Statistical, axiomatic definitions of probability. Binomial distribution,
poisson distribution and normal distribution (definitions, fitting-problems and their properties).
UNIT-V 14h
TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS:
Null and Alternative hypothesis, Type I and Type II errors, Level of significance, One tailed and
Two tailed test, z – test for single mean, t-test for single mean and difference of means, Chi-square
test for independence of attributes.
