Module 1

Design Process:- Introduction to Design and Engineering

Design, Defining a Design Process- Detailing Customer
Requirements, Setting Design Objectives, Identifying
Constraints, Establishing Functions, Generating Design
Alternatives and Choosing a Design.
Purpose of the course

i) introduce the undergraduate engineering students the fundamental

principles of design engineering.

ii) make them understand the steps

involved in the design process.

iii) familiarize them with the basic tools

used and approaches in design.
Students realize that design is not only concerned about the function
but also many other factors like customer requirements, economic,
reliability, etc. along with a variety of life cycle issues.

The course will help students to consider

aesthetics, ergonomics and sustainability
factors in designs and also to practice
professional ethics while designing.
Introduction

What is a design?

Design involves common human experience.

It is how we communicate the functions of an object through its

shape or form.

The answer can be stated as a

drawing produced to show the look
and function or working of any
object.
The object can be a structure, a
tool, a machine, a circuit, a web
page, a poster, a magazine cover
or even a software code.
While talking about designs, we should always ask "why" in our minds.

Why does a table have four legs?

Why should a chair have a back rest?

DESIGN ENGINEERING

Engineering is the application of scientific, economic, social and

practical knowledge in order to invent, build, design, develop and
maintain various devices, systems, machines, structures and processes.
Engineering design is a systematic, intelligent process in which
engineers generate, evaluate, and specify solutions for devices,
systems, or processes whose forms and functions achieve clients'
objectives and needs while satisfying a specified set of
constraints.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES

A feature or behavior that we wish the design to have or

exhibit.

Design objectives are the most significant feature to be

realised prior to commencing a design.

An objective is a problem you want to solve, so you can
"make things better".

It involves defining the requirements of a design.

Objectives of designing a portable television

• should be lightweight.

• should be easy to handle.

• should be economical.

• should be able to receive weak signals, etc.

Objectives of designing a mobile phone

• should be lightweight.

• should be compact.

• should be economical.

• should be able to use social media, take photos etc.

Design Constraints
A constraint is a limitation on design or project in various aspects.

It is described as a boundary or limitation on the behaviour of the

design.

A design constraint refers to some restriction on the conditions under

which a system or product is developed, or on the requirements of the
system.

The design constraint could be imposed on the function of the

product or it could be in the technology used to develop the product,
materials to be incorporated, time to develop the product, overall
economy, and so on.

Legal and ethical constraints Manufacturing Constraints

b) reliable
c) Means of production
What a design is expected or
scheduled to do.
The statement of a function typically couples an action verb to a noun or
object:
Eg: lift a book,support a shelf, transmit a current, measure a temperature,
or switch on a light

Design functions can be categorised as basic functions and

secondary functions.

The main work that the device is intended to do is the basic

function. Secondary functions are some other functions that
the device unintentionally perform while performing the basic
function.
For example, a spray which is designed for the

basic function of spraying performs a secondary

function of polluting the air unknowingly.

For a technical product, the number of
functions it can execute is usually considered
and employed for advertising. For example, an
ordinary calculator which is used to do the
basic mathematical operations of addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division, is
named as a "four-function" model. On
combining other functions, such as scientific,
financial, or statistical calculations,
manufacturers call it "a calculator with 57
scientific functions".
