Concept mapping
Why it is used in teaching & learning of science
(Dhull & Verma, 2020; Elhelou, 1997)
 Concept mapping: It is a tool that helps a learner to organize
their cognitive framework into more powerful integrated
patterns.
 It allows learner to be actively involved
 Learner Centered – Learners can work at their own speed
 It is a higher order task as it requires understanding
Concept mapping
Why it is used in teaching & learning of science
(Dhull & Verma, 2020; Elhelou, 1997)
• It combines visual learning with the spatial representation of
information to promote meaningful conceptual learning.
• It involves listing the main ideas/concepts and words and
arranging these in a hierarchy or relation to each other
Concept mapping
Why it is used in teaching & learning of science
(Dhull & Verma, 2020; Elhelou, 1997)
• It is a powerful tool to help learners work with text
• a) reading: finding those main ideas/ concepts.
• b) It helps learner to write as it provides a structure.
• (DART = directed activities related to text)
• It is a learning and evaluation tool.
Concept mapping Advantages
(Wang, 2019; Machado & Carvalho, 2020)

 Concept mapping (CM) organizes concepts, which promote

meaningful learning.
 CM promotes critical thinking and problem solving.
 It promotes collaborative learning.
 CM promotes knowledge retention, identify misconceptions, and provide
feedback to students.
 It promotes technology inclusion.
 CM promotes learning progress and assessment.
 It has a positive effect on exam scores.
Concept mapping
Disadvantages & Limitations
(Wang, 2019; Machado & Carvalho, 2020)

 Concepts & connections: In CM, it is easier to define

concepts than their connections.
 Time-consuming: Time required to create concept maps only
diminish with experience.
 Student resistance to change: Most students usually prefer
rote memorization of concepts. CM forces them out of their
comfort zones into meaningful learning patterns.
 Concept explanation: It is like a jigsaw puzzle that deprive
students the interpretation of the concept itself.
