Concept Mapping

Concept mapping is great way to build upon previous knowledge by connecting

information back to it. This post explores the uses of concept mapping and provides
tools for creating concept maps on the computer.

When new knowledge is integrated with and connected to existing knowledge that is
easier to knowledge and to remember. A professor’s job is to build scaffolding from
existing knowledge on which to hang incoming new knowledge. Using concept map
is one way to build scaffolidng.

A concept map is a visual organization and representation of knowledge. It shows

concepts and ideas the relationships among them. You create a concept map by
writing key words (sometimes enclosed in shapes such as circles, boxes, triangle, etc.)
and then drawing arrows between the ideas that is related. Then add a short
explanation by the arrow to explain how the concepts are related.

The following list contains functions that can be performed by using concept maps.
a) Analyze- to examine carefully and in detail so as to identify causes.
b) Brainstorm- Uses to show a system of persons or things ranked one above
another, left to right; uses in the beginning of a project to visually arrange interrelated
and sequentially ordered sections within the whole, similar to an outline.
c) Compare and Contrast- Uses to analyze similarities and differences between two
things.
d) Evaluate- Use to show positive, negative, and interesting attributes of a subject,
concept, topic, solution, etc. Hypothesize- A proposition assumed as a premise in an
argument.
e) Interact- Uses to show the nature of an interaction between persons or group.
f) Sequence- Uses when prioritizing elements from most important to least important
g) Visualize- Uses to see the description of physical structures, spatial relationships,
concrete objects abstract concepts, or images.

Benefits of Concept Map in Teaching

Since they graphically depict the connections between concepts, concept maps are
effective teaching aids that can improve both the teaching and learning processes. The
following are some main advantages of idea maps in the classroom:

1. Improved Concept Understanding

Students can better grasp the big picture and the connections between different pieces
of knowledge by using concept maps. Deeper knowledge is fostered by this
combination.
2. Enhanced Memory and Recall
Concept maps' visual format helps with memory recall. Students are more likely to
retain material when it is arranged in a relational or hierarchical manner.
3. Active Learning
It is necessary to actively engage with the material in order to create concept maps. It
helps students organize their information and challenges them to consider the
connections between ideas critically.

4. Clarification of Complex Ideas

By dividing complicated ideas into smaller, more manageable components, concept
maps might help make them easier to understand. This facilitates understanding of
abstract or challenging ideas.

5. Facilitates Reflection and Metacognition

Encourages Metacognition and Reflection

Students can reflect on their learning and identify knowledge gaps by revisiting and
improving their concept maps over time.

6. Improved Communication

As a visual aid for communication, concept maps assist students in clearly and
methodically presenting to others what they understand about a subject.

7. Promotes Critical Thinking

Students must evaluate which concepts are more essential or central when creating a
concept map, which promotes critical thinking and decision-making abilities.

8. Assessment Tool for Teachers

Teachers can also use concept maps as an assessment method. Teachers can learn
more about their students' comprehension and spot any places that could require more
explanation by looking over their maps.

9. Encourages Collaborative Learning

Making concept maps in groups encourages collaboration and gives students a

platform to exchange ideas, which results in more thorough, richer learning outcomes.

10. Flexible Across Subjects

 Concept maps can be applied across various disciplines, from science to

literature, making them versatile tools for teaching a wide range of content.

11. Helps with Problem-Solving

 Concept maps can aid in problem-solving by laying out possible solutions and
showing how they relate to different aspects of a problem or topic.

Incorporating concept maps into teaching encourages students to take an active role in
their learning process, fostering a deeper understanding and long-lasting retention of
the material.
