Euclid's Geomatry Class 9 Activity

Euclid, known as the 'father of geometry', was a Greek mathematician active in Alexandria around 300 BC, famous for his work 'The Elements', which laid the foundation for Euclidean geometry. His axioms and postulates have influenced various fields, including computer science, architecture, and physics. The presentation covers Euclid's life, his book, and the applications of geometry.

01 Who was
Euclid?
Euclid, sometimes called Euclid of Alexandria to distinguish him from Euclid of Megara, was a Greek
mathematician, often referred to as the "founder of geometry" or the "father of geometry". He was
active in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy

Died: Alexandria, Egypt

Born: Mid-4th century BC
Known for: Euclidean geometry; Euclid's Elements; Euclidean algorithm
Fields: Mathematics
Influenced: Virtually all of subsequent Western and Middle Eastern mathematics
About Euclid’s Book
02
The Elements (Ancient Greek: Στοιχεῖα Stoikheîa) is a mathematical treatise
consisting of 13 books attributed to the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid in
Alexandria, Ptolemaic Egypt c. 300 BC.

03 Applications of geomatry
Euclidean geometry has applications practical applications in computer
science, crystallography, and various branches of modern mathematics.
Differential geometry uses techniques of calculus and linear algebra to
study problems in geometry. It has applications in physics, including in
general relativity.

DEFINATIONS
04
05 AXIEMS
❏ Axiom 1: Things that are equal to the same thing are equal to one another.
❏ Axiom 2: If equals are added to equals, the wholes are equal.
❏ Axiom 3: If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal.
❏ Axiom 4: Things that coincide with one another are equal to one another.
❏ Axiom 5: The whole is greater than the part.
❏ Axiom 6 and Axiom 7: Things that are double of the same things are equal to
one another. Things that are halves of the same things are equal to one
another.
POSTULATES
06
❏ Postulate 1: A straight line segment can be drawn for any two given points.
❏ Postulate 2: A line segment can be extended in either direction to form a line.
❏ Postulate 3: To describe a circle with any center and radius.
❏ Postulate 4: All right angles are equal to one another.
❏ Postulate 5: If two lines are intersected by a third in such a way that the sum of
the inner angles on one side is less than two right angles, then the two lines will
intersect each other on that side if produced indefinitely.
