INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHICS DESIGN:

WHAT IS GRAPHICS DESIGN?

Suppose you want to announce or sell something, inform or persuade someone,
explain a complicated system or demonstrate a process. In other words, you have
a message you want to communicate. How do you “send” it? You could tell people
one by one or broadcast by radio or loudspeaker. That’s verbal communication.
But if you use any visual medium at all—if you make a poster; type a letter; create
a business logo, a magazine ad, or an album cover; even make a computer printout—
you are using a form of visual communication called graphic design.

GRAPHICS DESIGN:
Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate
ideas. The designer works with a variety of communication tools in order to convey a
message from a client to a specific audience.

The four building blocks/principles of graphics design:

•Colour
•Typography
•Space & Grid
•Alignment

•Colour: This is the visual characteristics of any object that may be described in terms of hue,
lightness and saturation.

categories of colour include:

•Cool colours
•Warm colours
•Neutral colours

•Cool colours: These includes, Green, blue, and purple. They are the colors of the night,of
water, of nature and are usually calming, relaxing and somewhat reserved.

•Warm colours: These includes Red, orange and yellow and variations of the three colors.
These are colours of fire or fallen leaves and sunrise and they're generally energizing,
passionate and positive.
These colors are called warm colours because they evoke feelings in people.

•Neutral colours: often serves as the background in designs. They are accent colours. But can
also be used on their own in designs and can create a very sophisticated layouts.

Neutral colours include:

•Black colour
•White colour
•Gray colour
• white colour
A color wheel is an abstract illustrative organization of color hues around a circle, which shows
the relationships between primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors etc.
Knowledge of the various sections of the colour wheel allows us to see where different hues and
saturations sit and in turn helps us understand which colours work together to create a tasteful
palette! Choosing colours that work well together is one of the pillars of graphic design.

TYPOGRAPHY: it is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible,
clear, and visually appealing to the reader when displayed.

Typography deals with style, arrangement, and appearance of the elements used by the
designer to portray his/her information through visual content.

Simply put typography is the art of print. In our daily lives we are
constantly surrounded by it. As simple as it may seem typography
subtly combines communicative and artistic elements to create a
print that is both pleasing and easy to read. Designers achieve this
by selecting the right fonts, lettering and print types. In order to be
successful it must complete two basic roles: clearly communicate the
intended message and do so in a visually effective way that is both
artistic and attractive.

SPACING AND GRIDE:

GRID: in graphics, it is a structure made up of a series of intersecting straight or curved lines
used to structure a content.

SPACING: is an art of giving your element breathing space. So your work won't appear jumbled
up.
A GRID

ALIGNMENT: it serves a great purpose by helping designers in organizing different elements in

their composition, giving the design a definite structure and creating balance.
It means the lining of graphics and text in relation to the various edges of the design canvas

The basic kinds of alignment include:

•Edge alignment
•left,right,top and bottom
•center alignment
REMOVING BACKGROUND:
Background removal in graphics is a process used in eliminating or altering the backdrop of an
image. it is the process of isolating the foreground of an image from its background, resulting in
a transparent or solid-colored background.

SOME APPS WE'LL BE USING FOR THE BEGINNERS CLASS

REMOVE BACKGROUND:
WITH THE REMOVE BACKGROUND APP, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO REMOVE AND ADD
VARIOUS BACKGROUNDS TO AN IMAGE
YOU CAN REMOVE BACKGROUND OF VARIOUS PHOTOS, AND IMAGES AND ADD ANY
BACKGROUND OF YOUR CHOICE.

ROUND PHOTO:

Round photo is used to to give various shapes to images (it's advisable to remove the images
background before using the round photo). These shapes vary from one another, from regular to
irregular shapes.

NOTE:IT'S ADVISABLE TO USE SIMILAR SHAPES FOR SIMILAR INSTANCES SO THAT

YOUR WORK SHOULDN'T LOOK ROUGH.

FONTS AND HACKS:

we've talked about typography two days ago, so basically I'm elaborating more.
It's central to every form of design, both print and digital. Typography has two main purposes in
graphic design. The first is to promote legibility, and the second is to help communicate the
messaging, tone, and sentiment of a design piece. Another function of typography revolves
around aesthetics.

CREATING A FLYER
FLYER:
it's a form of paper advertisment intended for wide distribution, posted or distributed in public
place, handed out to individuals or sent through mails.
It's usually used to draw attention, services, product or idea.

The most commonly used paper size for fler is the *A6 paper size (640×452)*

TYPED OF FLYER:
1) Program Flyer.
2) Sales Flyer

Sales Flyer is usually more expensive than program Flyer.

Things to consider when creating a flyer includes:

•Colour
•Colour Combination
• Fonts

Note: Flyer is different from banner, a banner is usually bigger in size, while a flyer is usually
smaller in size. poster is medium in size.

colour combination: always try not to mix 2 light colours together. E.g mixing white & Yellow.
Possible combination are; Red & White, Dark blue & Yellow.
Naturally just a light and dark colour goes well ( a light element on a dark background or a dark
element on a light background).

Note: Don't use more than 3 or at most 4 colours (only few cases) and that is if you understood
colours well in graphics.

Tiips on creating sales flyer

- have targeted audience
- must be informative
- must be convincing
- must command attention

CREATING A LOGO DESIGN

LOGO: A logo is a symbol used to represent a brand or business organization. logo's are used
to show distinction between brands or business of different entity.

Types of Logo: There are basically 7 different types of Logo:

1. Monogram logo: This is a type logo which involves the use of initials to create Logo. i.e short
form of a brand name to create a logo.(lettermark logo)

2. Pictorial logo: in this type of Logo icons are used to represent a brand. it is the use of icons to
design a logo for a business brand.

NOTE: it's advisable for a start-up business not to use pictorial logo for a start, it's only used for
a popularly known brand.

3. word marks: This type of Logo design involves the use of full name of a brand to design a
logo for that particular brand.

😜
4. abstract logo: as it implies abstract (imaginative ) , this usually entails creating a logo for a
brand using your imaginative idea. graphic designer are artist by the way.
5. Mascot Logo: This is the use of mascot (cartoon) images to create a logo for business or
brand. it's usually more expensive than other types of Logo. I usually charge 3-5k for this type of
Logo especially.

6. Emblem Logo: as the name goes (Embedded)...in this type of Logo design it usually involves
having an element embedded into another element. i.e it's supposed to tell a story of a brand,
e.g if you're a fashion designer, your fashion wear (of your choice) must be embedded into an
element. whenever people see that they already have an idea of what you're into.

7. Combination mark: This type of Logo design involves the combination of either one or two
types of a logo to create a single logo for a brand.
8. premium logo: it's a monogram type of Logo except that in this, texture is used instead of
colours.

BUSINESS CARD: A business card is a small card which includes an individuals name and
personal information (such as business, phone number, address, occupation e.t.c).

A business card typically includes the giver's name, company (usually a logo), and a contact
information (such as street address, telephone numbers, fax number , website, email
address,and social media handles

There's a difference between a call card and business card although similar.

A call card is more of a personal token of an interaction rather than representing a business
while a business card is meant to represent a business.

Note: use the brand colour of a business to design the card. It should be having that rhythm.
QUOTES DESIGN: these are words or phrases that are given out by a specific person to
describe a particular emotional or situation in life.

Types of quotes:
- Inspiration
- Motivation
- Life
- Business
- Friendship
- Family
- Any profession at all

So... quotes in graphics design is simply using visual character or elements like texts, pictures
e.t.c. to display specific messages on specific emotions to your targeted audience.
INVITATION CARD: This is a card which contains information for the purpose of attracting
guests or serves as an invite to either friend's, family members, co-workers e.t.c. to a special
events such as weddings, naming ceremony, graduation.e.t.c.

The A7 paper type is used for an invitation card (125 × 175) portrait and vise versa for
landscape.
POSTER: A poster is a temporary promotion of an idea, product or event which is put up in a
public place in order to create awareness for mass communication.

The main function of a poster is to capture a moving audience with a message via usual
context. Typically a poster should contain summary, short introductions, aims and objectives,
discussions, results and conclusions (Call to action).

A poster also has some features as a flyer. They can both be designed on the basis of sales
program.

The official paper size of a poster is (2560 × 1440) portrait and vice versa for landscape.
