Introduction to Electrical Machine

Assignment Submission date: December 03-2023

Individual assignment
Solve the following problem from chapter 3&4
Problem 1.
A three-phase, 415 V, 50 Hz, 6-pole, star-connected induction motor runs at 23 rev/s on full
load. The rotor resistance and reactance per phase are 0.25 and 2.5, respectively, and the
effective rotor-stator turns ratio is 0.85:1. Calculate (a) the synchronous speed, b) the slip, (c) the
full load torque, (d) the power output if mechanical losses amount to 770 W, (e) the maximum
torque, (f) the speed at which maximum torque occurs and (g) the starting torque.
Problem 2.
A 230-V four-pole 50-Hz Y-connected wound-rotor induction motor is rated at 20 hp.
Its equivalent circuit components are,
R1 = 0.330 Ω R2 = 0.227 Ω
X1 = 0.430 Ω X2 = 0.430 Ω XM = 20.0 Ω
Pmech = 400 W Pmisc ≈ 20W Pcore=300W

For a slip of 0.06, find

(a) The line current IL
(b) The stator copper losses PSCL
(c) The air-gap power PAG

(d) The power converted from electrical to mechanical form Pconv

(e) The induced torque τind
(f) The load torque τload
(g) The overall machine efficiency
(h) The motor speed in revolutions per minute and radians per second
Problem 3.
a) A 10kW shunt generator having an armature circuit resistance of 0.75 and a field
resistance of 125 generates a terminal voltage of 250V at full load. Determine the
efficiency of the generator at full load, assuming the iron, friction and windage losses
amount to 600W.

b) What EMF will be generated in a 6-pole lap wound DC generator if it is rotated at 250
RPM? The flux per pole is 0.05 Weber and the number of armature conductors is 960.

c) A DC shunt generator has an induced voltage of 125 V on open circuit. When the
machine is loaded the terminal voltage is 120 volts. The field resistance is 15 ohms and
the armature resistance is 0.05 ohm. Determine the load current.

d) A long shunt compound generator supplies a load current of 50 amperes at 220 volts.
Shunt field resistance is 110 ohms. Series field resistance is 0.01 ohm and armature
resistance are 0.02 ohm. Find the emf generated and power developed in the armature.
Take contact drop per bush as 1.5 volts.
Problem 4.
a) The shaft torque required to drive a d.c. generator is 18.7Nm when it is running at
1250rev/min. If its efficiency is 87 per cent under these conditions and the armature
current is 17.3A, determine the voltage at the terminals of the generator.
b) A 500V shunt motor takes a total current of 100A and runs at 1200rev/min. If the shunt
field resistance is 50, the armature resistance is 0.25 and the iron, friction and windage
losses amount to 2kW, determine the overall efficiency of the motor.

Group Assignment (5 students per group)
