What are SAP IS-Retail/ERP-Retail and S4HANA Retail ( On-premises/Cloud


based)?
A. SAP Retail is the old/initial version and S4 HANA Retail is the latest version with
advanced features and can be On-premises or Cloud based. SAP S/4HANA Retail is
the modernized, cloud-based version of SAP's traditional SAP Retail (IS-Retail/ERP
Retail).
S/4HANA Retail builds upon the foundation of SAP Retail but offers significant
enhancements, including real-time data processing, advanced analytics, and an
intuitive user interface with SAP Fiori.
It's designed to support the needs of modern retailers in a digital-first environment.
Basic functionality remains same but with added digital features which makes faster
system performance and superior customer experience.

Q. What is the history of SAP Retail and S4 HANA Retail?


A. In year 1996 SAP IS Retail was first introduced and implemented, Reebok
International Ltd. in late 1998 was the first U.S. company to go live with SAP Retail.
SAP S/4HANA Retail's first year, which was launched in 2015, focuses on providing
retailers with core enterprise business applications like Finance, Sales, and Supply
Chain. It leverages SAP's in-memory database technology, SAP HANA, to offer real-
time data analysis and process optimization. The cloud edition went live in May
2015.
SAP Retail solutions, particularly SAP S/4HANA Cloud for Retail, have a structured
release cycle with updates released twice a year. The most recent release, SAP
S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition, and SAP S/4HANA FPS02 for the 2022 release, was
on May 26, 2023. SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2502 was released on January
24, 2025.
