Canada Fuel
Fuel is used every day in our daily lives, so much so that we often forget how much of it we consume
each day. We use it to keep ourselves warm, power industry and manufacturing, and, most importantly,
run our vehicles. Daily, people use their cars to travel to destinations too far for their feet to carry them
there on time. However, using it comes with a price: fuel consumption. When fuels, such as gasoline or
diesel, burn, they emit large quantities of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the air. The release of
greenhouse gases is harmful to the Earth because it traps heat in the atmosphere, causing global warming.
While global warming cannot cease completely, it is possible to slow the rate and limit the amount of
global warming by reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emitted into the air. There are numerous ways
of reducing how much fuel is consumed by a vehicle. Some of these ways start before even starting the
engine. According to the Canadian Fuels Association, "each 25 kilograms of added cargo increases fuel
consumption by one percent in a mid-sized car" and "roof and bike racks create wind resistance and drag,
which can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 20 percent." By removing unnecessary cargo, fuel efficiency
can improve, emitting less gas into the air. It is also great to keep the vehicle serviced, its oil level and tire
pressure regularly checked, and its fuel consumption display monitored to maintain optimal fuel
efficiency (Canadian Fuels Association). On the road, there are times when people idle the car, whether it
be picking up a child from school, waiting for their partner from work, or simply checking the phone for
messages. This act emits gas into the air; with the car performing no productive activity, it only
exacerbates the environment. Another way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to carpool or take
public transit. Sharing transport vehicles "reduces road congestion and fuel consumption," making it a
win-win for both the people and the Earth. Strategic trip-planning is also a crucial part of reducing
emissions. Making one trip to all points A, B, and C will be immensely efficient than taking three
separate ones there. Keeping a consistent speed is crucial with fuel efficiency because vehicles are least
efficient when accelerating or idling, which is why speeding burns 20 percent more fuel than travelling at
100km/h (Canadian Fuel Association). While many other contributors accelerate the rate of global
warming, following these procedures for vehicles may slow it down to help future generations live in a
healthier Canada.
