Technology has revolutionized education, enhancing both teaching and learning

experiences. Digital tools and platforms have become essential in modern classrooms,
enabling educators to facilitate engaging and interactive lessons. Among these tools,
Learning Management Systems (LMS), virtual classrooms, and collaboration tools play
a crucial role in ensuring seamless instruction and communication between teachers
and students.

As a teacher in what ways do you use technology in your teaching process?

delivery, making it easier for both students and educators to manage and locate
resources. It promotes organization and reduces administrative tasks for
teachers.
 Greater Accessibility: The e-learning systems allow students to access course
materials anytime, anywhere. This flexibility encourages self-paced learning,
catering to different learning styles.
 Data-driven Decisions: With robust reporting and analytics tools, LMS can
provide valuable insights into student performance and course efficacy. These
data-driven insights can aid in making informed decisions about curriculum
design and teaching methodologies.
Challenges in Implementing LMS in Education
Despite the numerous benefits, the implementation and utilization of LMS are not
without challenges:
 Technical Issues: Like any digital platform, LMS can face technical glitches,
leading to disruptions in the learning process.
 Training Needs: Both educators and students need to be proficient in using the
platform. Lack of digital literacy can create barriers to effective utilization of LMS.
 User Adoption: Resistance to change can hinder the adoption of LMS. It
requires a change in mindset from traditional teaching and learning methods to a
digital approach.
 Cost Factor: High-end LMS platforms can be expensive, posing challenges for
budget-constrained institutions.

Virtual Classrooms
Virtual classrooms enable synchronous learning experiences where teachers and
students interact in real time, simulating a traditional classroom environment.

Key Features of Virtual Classrooms:

 Video Conferencing. A virtual classroom environment isn't just a webinar where
the learners are passive listeners while the instructor speaks. Instead, it is a
dynamic environment where all the attendees get to interact with each other
creating a collaborative learning environment synonymous to the one in a
3

physical classroom. This is where having a dedicated virtual classroom platform

can be advantageous. For instance, a dedicated virtual classroom platform lets
all the attendees & tutors connect their webcams and microphones in tandem.
This helps the instructors have a cue get a visual cue on how the learners are
following the lessons while allowing learners to interact among themselves.
Virtual classroom platforms like the one offered by BrainCert use state-of-the-art
webRTC technology for the transmission of audio and video content allowing
real-time audio/video transmission with the lowest latency, high availability, and
stable connectivity.
 Integrated digital whiteboard. Much like a blackboard in a traditional
classroom, virtual classroom platforms come with an integrated digital whiteboard
that plays a crucial role in the virtual classroom environment. These interactive
whiteboards allow instructors to sketch down ideas/concepts for the learners to
have a better understanding like in a traditional classroom. The whiteboard like
the one in BrainCert virtual classroom also allows contents in the video, image, &
doc format to be embedded helping instructors better convey a concept.
 Cross-device compatibility. The primary advantage of a virtual learning
environment is the flexibility it offers due to its cross-device compatibility. All that
instructors & learners need is stable internet connectivity.
 Cloud Recording. Cloud recording is a much-needed feature in virtual
classrooms that lets instructors record the classroom sessions. As mentioned
previously, virtual classroom environments can be both synchronous &
asynchronous. The cloud recording feature in virtual classroom platforms helps
instructors record the classroom session in real-time with a press of a button.
These recordings can be stored in the cloud and later be accessed by students
at a later stage. When compared to recording a session in a physical classroom
environment, recording a virtual session is a walk in the park.
 Breakout rooms. The whole idea of virtual classroom platforms being far better
than a web conferencing platform revolves around the extend of collaborative
features offered by the former. Breakout rooms is one such collaborative feature
offered by the virtual classroom platforms. Using the breakout room feature,
instructors can divide learners into small groups to promote peer-to-peer
engagement or for brainstorming.
 Capable of integration with an LMS. Most virtual classroom platforms can be
easily integrated with an existing or new LMS. Though this isn't something that
has got anything to do with the virtual classroom environment, this is indeed a
beneficial feature for asynchronous learning. By integrating the virtual classroom
platforms with an LMS, instructors can easily schedule live classes, track learner
progress/engagement, attendance, conduct tests, and more. This can especially
come in handy for educational institutions & organizations.
 Centralized control. Irrespective of whether it's a traditional classroom or a
virtual one, it is important that the instructors have full control over the classroom
environment. This is something that a web conferencing platform lacks. For
instance, in a web conferencing platform, instructors do not have an option to
control the attendees' functionalities of the platform. Whereas, in the case of
virtual classroom platforms, instructors have full control over functionalities such
as mute/unmute the mic, disabling private chats, and more. Now that we have
discussed some of the prominent features of a virtual classroom environment,
let's have a look at its significance.

Examples of Virtual Classroom Tools:

Benefits of Using Virtual Classroom

 Flexibility and Convenience. One of the most significant advantages of online
schools is the flexibility they offer. Students can attend classes from the comfort
of their homes, eliminating the need for long commutes and rigid schedules. This
flexibility is particularly beneficial for parents who juggle work and family
responsibilities, allowing them to create a customized learning environment for
their children. This can be awesome to go on family vacations and have your
child do work as you go. This also works great for kids who are in sports for most
of the day and can be a huge relief for them to not have to travel so much.
 Personalized Learning. Online schools often provide personalized learning
experiences tailored to each student’s pace and learning style. With access to a
wide range of educational resources and interactive tools, students can progress
at their own speed, focusing on areas where they need additional support and
5

accelerating through material they grasp quickly. This individualized approach

can lead to better academic outcomes and a deeper understanding of the
subject matter. I know some students don’t do well with interacting with certain
teachers. This allows them to not have to communicate and argue with teacher
and have more of an enjoyable experience. They have an automated system that
track them and they have no one else to be upset about except themselves.
 Access to a Diverse Curriculum. Virtual classrooms open doors to a diverse
array of courses and subjects that may not be available in traditional schools.
From specialized electives to advanced placement classes, online schools offer
students the opportunity to explore their interests and pursue unique
educational pathways. This accessibility ensures that every child has the chance
to receive a well-rounded education tailored to their passions and aspirations.
We have learned that have a teacher lecture can be unproductive. Students
actually can learn a lot more with videos from professionals that are actually in
the field that students are interested in. It is quite amazing how much can be
learned in such a little amount of time.
 Enhanced Parental Involvement. Online schooling encourages
greater parental involvement in their child’s education. Parents have the
opportunity to closely monitor their child’s progress, review assignments, and
communicate directly with teachers. This increased transparency fosters
stronger partnerships between parents, students, and educators, ultimately
leading to a more supportive learning environment. Parents do need to monitor
more to make sure their child isn’t going out of control. It can be difficult to
manage doing online school for some students so this is a must if a parent is
thinking of online school.

CHALLENGES OF ONLINE SCHOOLS

 Lack of Social Interaction. One of the primary challenges of online schools is
the potential for social isolation. Without daily face-to-face interaction with peers
and teachers, students may miss out
on crucial socialization opportunities essential for their emotional and social
development. Building friendships, participating in group activities, and
developing interpersonal skills can be more challenging in a virtual setting. This
is a big one and can be supplemented in a lot of different way but there needs
to be some type of socialization for students.
 Technology Barriers. Access to reliable technology and high-speed internet is
essential for successful online learning. However, not all families have equal
access to these resources, creating a digital divide that disproportionately
affects disadvantaged students. Technical glitches, software compatibility issues,
and online security concerns can also hinder the learning experience for both
students and teachers. Some students are not good with technology and can’t
look at a screen for a whole day. This is definitely something to consider and
most students don’t like it.
 Self-Motivation and Time Management. Online schooling requires a high
degree of self-discipline, motivation, and time management skills. Without the
structure of a traditional classroom setting, some students may struggle to stay
focused and organized, leading to procrastination and academic setbacks.
Parents play a crucial role in supporting their child’s self-regulation skills and
helping them establish effective study habits. There are a lot of students that fail
online. During COVID-19, we saw a lot of students lack this fundamental skill that
is necessary for online school.
 Limited Extracurricular Activities. While online schools offer a diverse
academic curriculum, they may lack opportunities for extracurricular activities
such as sports, clubs, and performing arts programs. These activities are integral
to a well-rounded education and provide students with valuable
experiences outside the classroom. Parents may need to seek out alternative
avenues for their child to participate in extracurricular pursuits and socialize with
6

peers. This is dependent on the family and situation. There can be a lot of
opportunities but parents need to be active in finding them. Leadership Society
of Arizona has a lot of opportunities that help facilitate this interaction.

Collaboration Tools
Collaborative software or groupware are programs or sets of programs that
people use to achieve a common goal. These tools allow people to share information
and communicate with each other even if they are in different locations. In the ICT
community, it is now a common practice for people in different countries to work
together on a single project.
Types of Groupware
1. Synchronous groupware. These are groupware or collaborative tools that allow
the sharing of information in real-time. This means that the recipient can instantly
see the information that was sent or shared. Synchronous groupware includes
but are not limited to:
 Online chat. This is a technology that enables two or more people to
send and receive short messages instantly. Messages sent by all parties
are displayed in a chat room or chat box and can be viewed by all
members.
 VoIP. It is safe to say that VoIP is simply an Internet-powered telephone
service. Short for “voice over Internet protocol”, this technology allows
people to make voice calls through the Internet.
 Videoconferencing. Videoconferencing is the collection several ICT
technologies that allow 2 or more people to communicate through real-
time audio and video. The most popular example is Skype.
2. Asynchronous groupware. Information shared using asynchronous groupware
are not instantly displayed to other members of the group. Most of the time,
participants are free to choose when they want to view the shared information.
Asynchronous groupware includes but are not limited to:
 Email. As discussed in a previous chapter, emails are sent and stored in
the recipient’s inbox. The recipient can then read the email when he logs
in.
 Online forums. Also known as message boards, forums are online
services where people can post messages for others to read and reply to.
Forums are virtually identical to comment sections in social networking
sites.
 Wiki. By now, you must know what a wiki is. Wikis qualify as
asynchronous collaboration tools because they can be edited by members
of an online community.
 Shared calendar. A shared calendar is simply an online calendar with
many users. Shared calendars are used by groups to coordinate time and
schedule activities.
