the virtuous maiden is one of the most famous legends.

As a reverential gesture, visitors are recommended to remove their shoes before entering the mausoleum. In the premises of the mausoleum lies the Mahsuri's tomb, a well, an aviary and a conventional house. Beside the tomb, the whole story of the maiden is written on a panel. The waters of Mahsuri's well are said to have healing properties. In the aviary, one can check out the exotic variety of birds along with peacocks, while the traditional house is a host to ancient artifacts of Langkawi.

Gunung Mat Cincang - A Walk in the Clouds The legendary Gunung Mat Cincang, Langkawi's second highest peak was believed to have been once a being named Mat Cincang who turned himself into a mountain. Fables aside, today the mountain rises in a spectacular skyline of crags that glow pink in the sunset and is part of the Mat Cincang Range which comprises of some of the oldest rock formations in Malaysia, dated about 2,400 million years old. Mat Cincang Mountain is a popular tourist attraction due to having the facilities of a cable-car, shopping complex and sky bridge in its vicinity.

The Legendary Pulau Dayang Bunting Every beautiful place seems to have a legend behind, which makes it more interesting and memorable. Literally, the name of the island means "Island of the Pregnant Maiden". It has a touching and fairy-tale-like legend, making the island seems to be more mystical and amazing at the same time. The story of this island began when a beautiful fairy princess Mambang Sari and Mat Teja, a man who fell in love with the princess from the moment he saw her. Mat Teja met Mambang Sari at the lake and he was attracted by her beauty. Getting advices from a wise old man, Mat Teja finally managed to win the heart of Mambang Sari. Living happily on earth, Mambang Sari bore Mat Teja a son. However, their happy moment did not last any longer as their baby died after a short while. Undergoing such a traumatic and tremendous pain, Mambang Sari decided to lay her child to rest in peace in the lake. At the same time, she blessed all the childless and infertile women to be conceivable after bathing themselves in the lake.

Mahsuri Mausoleum The Mahsuri Mausoleum marks the spot where Mahsuri was buried. It is located at Kampung Mawat, which is about 17.8 kms northwest of Kuah, in Langkawi. Earlier called Makam Mahsuri (literally Mahsuri Mausoleum), Kota Mahsuri was erected to honor the fair maiden, Mahsuri, who was unfairly accused of adultery over 200 years ago. Gunung Jerai Formerly known as "Kedah Peak", this forest-clad Gunung Jerai is a massive limestone outcrop that rises 1200m above sea level. As the highest peak in the state, it adds a touch of variety to the scenic flat plains seen throughout the area. It's located near Sungei Petani, not far from the island of Penang. When you've been on Penang you must have seen the Gunung Jerai (across the sea) on the mainland. Gunung Jerai plays a most important part in the history of Kedah. Before Melaka became a central trading hub, Gunung Jerai must have been a welcomed sight, being the only visible landmark identifiable from miles away.

Pantai Merdeka Besides beaches in the legendary Pulau Langkawi, the beaches of mainland Kedah are equally spellbinding. Most popular is Pantai Merdeka which has been an ideal tourist venue even long before Langkawi's fame. Pantai Merdeka could be the only tourist beach attraction on the mainland Kedah. Located in Kuala Muda district, about 60 km south of Alor Setar, or about 26km from the town of Sungai Petani. Pantai Merdeka is famous for its white sandy beach with seaside picnic spot among the locals and the neighbouring states of Penang and north Perak. Facilities found here include chalets, rest house, campsite, swimming pool and food outlets. There are adequate facilities for watersport activities. The beach is also excellent for swimming at high tide.

Lata Bayu This is a very old recreation area and also a renowned spot in the northernmost part of the country. The famous Baling area, a town where meetings with the then Communist insurgents were held! The Waterfall is a finale to series of rapids ending up with a cascades. Total height of the continuous slide is about 30 meters high. A beautiful pathway follows the left bank all the way until a level plain on top of the rapids.

Nearby are fishing villages of Tanjung Dawai, Telok Nipah and Kampung Pulau Sayak, which are also tourist attractions especially during the weekends.
