Force Restore On Windows Media Server
Force Restore On Windows Media Server
1 System Administrator's Guide, Volume I for Windows NetBackup DataCenter (tm) 4.5 System Administrator's Guide for Windows Page: N/A Modification Type: Addition Modification: Media Host Override is a setting commonly used to redirect restores from one media server to another media server. This is useful when the original media server is no longer available to perform the restore. The Windows Administration console prevents configuring multiple server pairs for this option. This can be accomplished, however, by modifying a registry key on the master server. The following steps can be used to do so: 1. Open the NetBackup (tm) Administration GUI for Windows 2. Expand NetBackup Management | Host Properties in the left pane 3. Select Master Server in the left pane 4. Double-click the master server name in the right pane to access its properties 5. In the Master Server Properties property sheet, click the General Server section 6. Locate Media Host Override. If the fields are not populated, enter original and alternate media server names in the From: and To: fields under Media Host Override. Later versions of NetBackup may label these fields as Server that performed original backups: and Server that should perform restore:. 7. Click OK to commit these changes. This will add a value to the master server's registry. 8. Click Start | Run and run regedt32. It is necessary to use regedt32 and not regedit, as regedit may not properly edit multistring (MULTI_SZ) values. Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes. 9. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\VERITAS\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config 10. Locate the value FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER in the right pane of the REGEDT32 window 11. Double-click FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER to edit it 12. Add additional pairs of original and alternate servers to the list as needed (Figure 1), using the <Enter> key to insert hard returns, and keep each pair of servers on a separate line. These are the "from" and "to" servers respectably.
Figure 1: Multiple pairs of servers are configured for Media Host Override by editing the "FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER" value.
13. Click OK and exit the registry editor Note: If a restore is being performed by a media server that did not originally perform the backup, ensure that this media server has access to the necessary media and devices to do so.
