Thesis Proposal

This document proposes a thesis to assess the seismic vulnerability of traditional buildings in Bhaktapur, Nepal. It will inventory buildings, assess their materials and condition, determine seismic performance, and assign vulnerability indices. The methodology will be informed by existing assessment methods like FEMA 154 but adapted for Nepal's construction techniques. The objective is to understand risk, strengthen buildings, and guide emergency response. A literature review explores past methods and their application. Work will include data collection, modeling, interpretation from April 2012 to February 2013. The results will create a GIS map of building vulnerabilities in the study area.

Introduction:

Earthquake is destructive natural disasters Nepal is earthquake prone area Traditional building stock in Bhaktapur city is of Masonry structures (with mud and Timber floor)

Seismic vulnerability (measures of seismic strength or capacity of buildings)

8/31/12

Why seismic vulnerability assessment?

Seismic vulnerability is needed for

to understand the current condition of the structures To reduce the damage of buildings during earthquake To determine method of strengthening for the allocation of rescue forces and equipment to vulnerable area

Assessment is not done yet in selected area

8/31/12

Vulnerability assessment methods:

Seismic vulnerability assessment methods as per their requirement in content to their country

Rapid Visual Screening of Seismically Hazardous Building (FEMA 154)

HAZUS (HAZARD US) Risk Assessment Tools for Diagnosis of Urban Area against Seismic Disasters (RADIUS)

In context of Nepal the above methods have some deficiencies

Difference in material and technique of building construction

Traditional building topology There is not its own assessment method in Nepal Relation between these above methods are not workout

ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGIES OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS"

The seismic vulnerability of a structure can be described as its susceptibility to damage by ground shaking given level of damage to a given building type due to a scenario earthquake. The various methods for vulnerability assessment that have been proposed in the past for use in loss estimation can be divided into two main categories: empirical or analytical, both of which can be used in hybrid.

ASSESSMENT OF VULNERABILITY OF CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURES DUE TO EARTHQUAKE IN SYLHET CITY AND MANAGEMENT In this paper, results are presented on the assessment of seismic vulnerability of buildings in Zone III of Sylhet city, Bangladesh. This study was based on a methodology for earthquake vulnerability analysis using Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) and a structural scoring system (S value >2 indicating Seismic safety). The survey showed that most of the buildings studied in the city fell in the category of seismically moderate to high risk range (S value of 2 or less). Criteria for construction of seismically safe buildings have been proposed.

Objective:

Prepare inventory of buildings stock of a specific area of Bhaktapur city.

Determine the topology of buildings. Determination of materials conditions (damage state). To assess seismic performance of building.

Continue

To determine the seismic vulnerability index of buildings in research area.

To find out the appropriate methods of vulnerability assessment in context of Nepal.
