Chapter 3 Summary

I.

Distributive Property

The distributive property is when you need to find the product of two numbers , write one of the numbers as a sum or difference. Then use the Distributive property to help you find the product mentally. 9(54) (950) + (94) 450 + 36 = 486

I. Associative Property of Addition and Multiplication

When you are only adding or multiplying, changing the grouping will not affect the sum or product
(6+8) +9 = 6+ (8+9) (28) 16 = 2 (816) (A+B) +C = A+ ( B+C) (AB) C = A (BC)

I. Commutative Property of Addition and Multiplication

You can add numbers in any order. You can multiply numbers in any order 3+4 = 4+3

A+B = B+A
217 = 172 AB = BA

II. Simplifying Expressions

Say you have 4(7x 3) + 2x First you would get rid of the parenthesis by using the Distributive property to get 28x 12 + 2x Then you combine like terms and do 28x + 2x to simplify the equation to get 30x 12 And then you have a simplified equation.

III. Solving an algebraic equation

7x 10 9x = -13 First combine like terms and do 7x 9x to simplify the equation to get

-2x 10 = -13
Then you add 10 to both sides to get -2x = -3

Then you divide -2 from both side to get

X = -1.5

IV. Solving an algebraic equation with Fractions

5x + x 1 = 11
6 3 2 6

First you find the LCM of 6, 3, and 2 which is 6 to get 5x + 2x 3 = 11 Then combine like terms and do 5x + 2x to simplify the equation to get 7x 3 = 11 Then you add 3 to both sides to get 7x = 14 Then you divide 7 to both sides to get X=2

v. Graphing Inequalities
2<x -5 To solve it multiply -5 to both sides to get -10 < x And then you graph it First you find where -10 is on a line graph.

Then if it has or equal to you put a filled in dot and if it does not have or equal to you put an empty dot on that spot and put an arrow which ever way x is to -10 in this case it is greater than or equal to -10

VI. Solving Inequality's

-4x + 4 > -8 First you subtract 4 from both sides to get -4x > -12 Then you divide -4 from both sides to get X > -3 Then you graph the simplified inequality

VII. Open circles and closed circles

An open circle means that the inequality is less than or greater than. A closed circle means that the inequality is less than or equal to, or greater than or equal to.

VIII. Inequality word problems

Chris wants to buy a bicycle that costs $160. if he saves $12 each week, what is the fewest number of weeks she must save in order to buy the bicycle? 14 weeks

Mark worked on math homework less than 1/3 the amount of time that his brother did. If mark spent 25 min on his math homework, how much time did his brother spend on his math homework? More than 75 min
One third of a number, decreased by thirty six, is at most twenty two. Find the number. The number is less than or equal to 174
