Diabetes Mellitus Type 1

26 million Americans have diabetes, which is 8% of the population. 85% of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes, which is most common in adults but increasing in children by 3% per year worldwide. A 2012 study by the University of North Carolina found that antibodies specific for CD4/CD8 T cells returned blood sugar levels to normal in mice with type 1 diabetes within 48 hours and 80% of mice remained in remission after 5 days, with an observed increase in regulatory T-cells.
