Lecture - Convective Heat Transfer

This document discusses heat transfer via convection and defines key terms and dimensionless numbers related to heat transfer. It describes forced convection, which is caused by external means like fans and blowers, and natural convection, which is induced by buoyancy forces from density differences due to temperature variations. It also discusses heat transfer during phase changes like boiling and condensation. Dimensionless numbers like the Reynolds, Nusselt, Prandtl, Grashof, and Rayleigh numbers are defined. Types of natural and forced convection are explained. Heat transfer inside pipes and in double-pipe heat exchangers is also summarized.

Heat Transfer By Convection

Heat Transfer via Convection

Energy transfer by random molecular motion (as in conduction)
plus bulk (macroscopic) motion of the fluid.
Convection: transport by random motion of molecules and by
bulk motion of fluid.
Advection: transport due solely to bulk fluid motion.
Forced convection: Caused by external means, (fans and blowers)
Natural (free) convection: flow induced by buoyancy forces,
arising from density differences arising from temperature variations
in the fluid
The above cases involve sensible heat (internal energy) of the fluid
Latent heat exchange is associated with phase changes boiling
and condensation.
