The “Designer” Methods of the 1970s:

CLL, Suggestopedia, Silent Way, Total

Physical Response, The Natural Approach

Key Questions:
1. What were the main issues in the 1970s that
encouraged the invention of more innovative methods
for language teaching?
2. How did the teaching method develop from the era of
Audiolingualism to the era of “Designer” methods?
3. What are the main characteristics of these methods?
How are they different & similar?
From Audiolingual to Community Language
Learning (CLL)
Audiolingual  emphasize on surface forms
& the rote practice of
produced patterns
Less popular when:
1. Chomskyan revolution in linguistic: “deep
structure” of language;
2. Psychologists recognized the fundamentally
affective and interpersonal nature of all
learning
The 1970s: fruitful era of ELT
 Many second language research
 The importance of both cognitive and
AFFECTIVE factors in L2 learning
more innovative methods The importance
for ELT:
of
1.Community Language
Learning psychological
2.Suggestopedia factors
3.The Silent Way in language
4.Total Physical Response learner’s success
5.The Natural Approach
The 1970s: The “Designer” Methods
 Claims for the success of the innovative
methods; The claims were often overstated
& overgeneralised to attract people

David Nunan (1989) calls them

THE DESIGNER METHODS
(promises for success, one size fits all!)
Community Language Learning
 Carl Rogers’ Humanistic psychology (1951)
• Adult often feel threatened by a new learning situation.
• They are threatened by the change inherent in learning &
by the fear that they will appear foolish.
• A way to deal with the fears of student is for teachers to
become ‘language counselor’ -> someone who
understand the struggle of students who learn a new
language.
• By understanding students’ fear and being sensitive to
them, teacher can help students overcome their negative
feelings and turn them into positive energy to further
their learning
Community Language Learning
 Charles Curran ‘s “Counseling-Learning” model
of education : students & teacher join
together to facilitate learning in a context of
valuing and prizing each individual in the group
-Each person lower defenses, more open
for interpersonal communication
-The group support for less anxiety.
-Teacher as “counselor”, not threat nor
impostor of limits & boundaries.
Community Language Learning
 CLL advisee teachers to consider their
students as ‘whole person’

• Teacher consider not only their

student’s intellect, but also have some
understanding of the relationship
among students’ feelings, physical
reactions, instinctive protective
reactions, and desire to learn.
CLL Basic Methodology
1. The group of learners first build interpersonal
relationship and trust. They do this in the
native language.
2. Then they sit in a circle with the (counselor)
teacher outside the circle.
3. When one of them wants to say something to
the group or an individual, he or she says it in
L1 and the (counselor) teacher translate the
utterance back to the learner in the L2.
4. The Learner then repeats that L2 sentence
as accurate as possible.
CLL Basic Methodology
5.Another learners respond in L1; the utterance
is translated by the counselor; the client
repeats; and the conversation continues.
6.If possible the conversation is taped for later
listening, and at the end of each session the
learners together inductively attempt to
learn information about the new language.
7.If needed, the counselor provides some
explanation of certain linguistic rules or
items.
CLL Basic Methodology
8. As the learners gain more and more
familiarity with the foreign language,
more and more direct communication
can take place, with the counselor
providing less and less direct
translation & information, until after
many sessions (months or years), the
learners become fluent in the spoken
language.
Most Basic Principles of CLL

1.LEARNING IS PERSONS =
whole-person learning of another
language takes place best in relationship of
trust, support, and cooperation between
teacher & student and among students
2. LEARNING IS DYNAMIC & CREATIVE =
learning is a living & developmental
process.
The Advantages & Disadvantages of CLL
ADVANTAGES:
- Some of the threatening affective
factors can be reduced.
- Supportive group in our classroom can
be created as much as possible.
- Allow student to initiate language.
- Train learners to be autonomous
learners.
The Advantages & Disadvantages of CLL
DISADVANTAGES:
- Teacher can be too nondirective.
- Inductive struggle to understand rules
of language are sometimes
unnecessary.
- The success of CLL depends largely on
the translation expertise of the
counselor. Translation is not always
easy to do.
Suggestopedia
• Let’s work together to answer the following
questions about Suggestopedia:

1. What were the rationales for the invention of

the Suggestopedia?
2. What are the basic principles of this method?
3. What is its the basic methodology?
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages
of this method?
Suggestopedia : the rationales
Suggestopedia : the basic principles
Suggestopedia : the basic methodology
Suggestopedia : the advantages
Suggestopedia : the disadvantages
Suggestopedia : the conclusion
