Growing Dots

The document describes a pattern of growing dots over time. Each minute, 4 more dots are added according to the function f(t) = 4t + 1, where t is time in minutes. After 1 minute there are 5 dots, after 2 minutes there are 9 dots, and so on. The pattern can be represented visually with arms extending in length over time. To determine how many minutes have passed when there are 25 or 73 dots, the inverse of the function must be taken to undo the pattern.

From Total Dots to Time

Effective algebraic thinking sometimes
requires students to undo a
mathematical process. This helps build
understanding as well as the ability to
perform a procedure. (Driscoll)
