Subject Centred Design

This document discusses subject-centered curriculum design. It is focused on teaching academic subjects as distinct units, with the content selected prior to instruction. Key characteristics include measuring learning based on mastery of subject matter, teaching subjects separately without integration, and emphasizing skills practice within each topic. The document also outlines requirements like trained subject-specific teachers and separate classrooms. Reasons given for this approach include clear expectations for teachers and students, and ease of achievement-based evaluation.

One of the
most
prominent is
the subjectcentered
design.

Characteristics of subject
centred design
Progress is measured
by how much of the
subject a pupil has
learnt

Each subject is a
distinct unit with own
organization
Subject matter is
selected before T&L
sessions

Learning is measured by how well the subject

matter has been mastered
Through frequent tests

Each teachers teaching different subjects do

not plan the courses together

Subject matter is taught in a logical organized

manner
Thus, content is selected before it is taught.
It is selected from the help of specialists,
supervisors, or textbook writers

Characteristics of subject
centred design
Learning subject
matter is an end
in itself

There is a
predetermined
uniform standard
of knowledge
Practice in skills
is emphasized

Learn what is in the subject itself, not out of

the subject

Example: Textbook
Each textbook has been outlined by certain
professional which is standardized throughout
the schools in the country
Example: English Textbook
Four skills are being emphasized in each
topic/unit in the subject

Requirements for the Optimum Operation of

Subject-centered design

Trained Teachers
with mastery in a
subjects and expert
in methodology are
required to teach.

A separate
classroom for each
subject and each
level.

Special
arrangements for
guidance physical
education, Indoor
and outdoor
activities, tours
and examinations

A fixed time table

is required for
different subjects
according to
importance of the
subjects and age in
curriculum.

Need of Text books

and guidebooks for
subject base
curriculum.

Reasons for using Subject

Centered Curriculum
The teacher knows what is expected
of him to teach. The students also
know what is expected of them.
Its evaluation is very easy.
Achievement based testing is the
only type of evaluation needed for
the mastery of the subject matter.

Reasons for using Subject Centered

Curriculum
It has a bright future. Subject approach is
useful for specialization in any branch of
knowledge. The continued increase in the
store of human knowledge will cause
specialization to become more effective.
This type of curriculum is more appropriate
for intellectual development
