Welcome: Mtap-Deped Saturday Mathematics Program Grade V Session 1

This document provides instructions and examples for students on place value and operations with whole numbers up to billions. It begins with an explanation of place value and how to read and write whole numbers. Students are then given examples to practice identifying place values and the value of individual digits in multi-digit numbers. The document also includes exercises for students to convert between standard, expanded, and word forms of numbers; compare and order numbers; perform rounding; and solve word problems involving place value. The overall purpose is to help students master foundational place value concepts and skills.

Knowing place value and reading and writing whole

numbers are important to understand the lessons that
will follow. Study them well; It will pay off!
When reading whole numbers, always read the numeral
first, and then the group name from left to right.
Therefore, we read 246,000 as

(two hundred) thousand + (forty) thousand + (six)

thousand

( two hundred forty six) thousand = 246 thousand.

I. Read each number. Give the place values and

values of the digits that appear twice. How
many times as great is the greater place value?

a) 80 874

Read and written as eighty thousand,

eight hundred seventy-four

80 874 the place value is ten thousands

and the value is 80,000 (8 x 10,000 =
80,000)
80 874 the place value is hundreds
and the value is 800 (8 X 100 = 800)
100 times (80000800 = 100)

b) 95, 069

Read and written as ninety-five

thousand, sixty-nine

95, 069 the place value is ten thousands

and the value is 90,000 (9 x 10,000 =
90,000)
95, 069 the place value is ones
and the value is 9 (9 X 1 = 9)
10, 000 times (900009 = 10, 000)
