Ophthalmologist; Rizal worked as his assistant
Reason why Rizal take Ophthalmology:
To cure his mothers eye ailment.

Rizal helped Luna by posing as model in several paintings.

IN HISTORIC HEIDELBERG (FEB. 3, 1886)


Rizal became a member of The Chess Players Club.
He worked at University Eye Hospital under the direction of Dr. Otto
Becker.
He noticed that the German Catholics and Protestants practiced
Ecumenism.
To the Flowers of Heidelberg
Rizal visited the Neckar River
He was fascinated by the blooming flowers especially Forgetme- not.

During his vacation at Wilhelmsfeld, Rizal stayed at the


vicarage of a kind Protestant pastor, Dr. Karl Ullmer.
July 31, 1886- Rizal wrote his first letter in German to
Blumentritt.

Aug. 14, 1886 he arrived at Leipzig
University of Leipzig- he attended lectures on Psychology and
History
Rizal translated:
Schillers William Tell- to know the champion of Swiss
Independence
Hans Christian Andersens Fairy Tales- for his nieces and nephews
He worked as a Proof-Reader because of his knowledge of German,
Spanish and other European languages.
During his stay in Dresden he met Dr. Adolph B. Meyer ( Director of
the Anthropological and Ethnological Museum)

Dr. Feodor Jagor author of Travels in the Philippines
Dr. Rudolf Virchow- famous German Anthropologist
Dr. W. Joest German geographer
Dr. Karl Ernest Schweigger- Famous German Ophthalmologist; where
Rizal worked
Rizal became a member of Anthropological Society, Ethnological
Society, and the Geographical Society of Berlin. (Recommendation by
Dr. Jagor and Dr. Meyer)

March 11, 1886- he wrote a letter to his sister Trinidad. In
this letter, Rizal expressed his high regard and admiration for
German womanhood.
German Women are diligent, educated and friendly. She is not
Gossipy, Frivolous and Quarrelsome like Spanish woman.
Now that you are still young you should strive to read, read,
and learn. You must not allow yourself to be conquered by
indolence because it costs so little to cast it off. (Rizals
advised to his sister)
