Research Methodology

This document discusses various types of research methodologies and components of research. It outlines different types of research including large scale surveys, small scale surveys, case studies, experiments, models, participant observation, and action research. It also discusses the purposes of exploratory, descriptive, and explanatory research. Key components of research discussed include the research philosophy, approach, strategy, choice, time horizons, and techniques/procedures. The document emphasizes developing a research question and objectives, and outlines factors to consider in research design such as objectives, data collection sources, constraints, and ethics.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Types of research include

Large scale surveys (of people, organisations,

events, etc) analysed statistically
Small scale surveys with emphasis on
qualitative detail
Case studies (to see how something works in
detail)
Experiments (change something to see what
happens)
Models can be set up, tested and used for
Participant observation (observe as participant)
Action research (combine research and action)
Evaluation

Purpose of Research

ploratory research: What is happening? Seek new insights, A

estions and assess phenomena in a new light
obson, 2002)

scriptive studies: Accurate profile of people, events or

uations (Robsen, 2002)

planatory studies: Establish casual relationships between

Research Onion

Research Philosophy
Development of knowledge and the nature
of that knowledge
The research philosophy you adopt contains
important assumptions about the way in which you
view the world.
The researcher who is concerned with facts, such as
the resources needed in a manufacturing process,
is likely to have a very different view on the way
research should be conducted from the researcher
concerned with the feelings and attitudes of the
workers towards their managers in that same
manufacturing
process.

Use of Research
Philosophy
to help researchers clarify their assumptions about their view of
the nature of science and society;
to offer a useful way of understanding the way in which other
researchers approach their work;
to help researchers plot their own route through their research;
to understand where it is possible to go and where they are
going.

Research Approach
Deduction: testing theory
deducing a hypothesis (a testable proposition about
the relationship between two or more concepts or
variables) from the theory;
If BIM is introduced in construction sector, there would
be better communication and coordination.
Conduct survey, and establish if valid.
Induction: building theory
Conduct survey, and find out how to better
communication and coordination

Research Process
The way you chose to answer your RQs will be influenced by
your research philosophy and approach;

Your RQ will subsequently inform your choice of research

strategy, your choices of collection techniques, and analysis
procedures, and the time horizon over which you undertake
your research project;

Your Research Design will be the general plan of how you will
go about answering your RQs;

You must have valid reasons for all your research design
decisions;

The justification should always be based on your RQs and ROs

Exercise
Think of a possible topic that you would like to
explore further by research, and how would
you approach it.
