Rocks are composed of minerals and form the earth's crust. There are three main types of rocks: sedimentary rocks which are formed from compressed sediment; igneous rocks which solidify from molten material; and metamorphic rocks which are formed from existing rocks undergoing heat and pressure. Sedimentary rocks specifically form over time as layers of sediment like rock fragments and mud accumulate on sea or lake floors and become compressed into solid rock by additional layers.

What are rocks?
Rocks are mineral materials forming part of
the surface of the earth, known as the crust.
Geologists study a number of things that
they call rocks.
Types of rocks Granite
There are three types of rocks: sedimentary
rocks, igneous rocks and metamorphic
rocks.
Formation of Rocks
Rocks are made up of grains of different
materials known as minerals. Each mineral
is made up of one chemical substance. In Quartz
some rocks, the minerals form small
crystals. In other rocks, crystals are quite
large.
Names of some rocks
Granite is a rock made from quite large
crystals of three different minerals. Granite is
sometimes polished and used for flooring

(1) What is sediment?
Rivers carry a lot of sediment.
Sediment is made up of little

settles out in the water when the
river reaches the sea.

Layers of fragments of rocks or
mud collect on the sea bed. As
more layers build up on top of them,
the weight of the new layers
presses the particles in the
deeper layers together. It is called
a sedimentary rock.
