Introduction To Air Conditioning System Design: Various Phases of Design

The document discusses the design of air conditioning systems. It outlines the various phases of design such as schematic, preliminary, and final design. It also lists factors to consider in system selection like performance requirements, capacity, cost, and maintainability. The document then covers calculating cooling and heating loads, which involve determining external loads from the building envelope and internal loads from occupants, equipment, and lighting. Load calculations consider conduction, solar gain, ventilation, infiltration, and other factors using methods like the cooling load temperature difference approach.

2.2.2 HVAC Design
The amount of heat that must be removed (cooling load) is not always
equal to the amount of heat received at a given time, because of heat
storage and time lag effects.

Even on very hot sunny day inside of a building built with thick stone wall
remains cool due to of heat storage and time lag effects.

6
CLTD (Cooling Load Temperature
difference) method considers the
heat storage effect of building
envelope during heat transfer.

7
Conduction load through building envelope
Q = U x A x CLTD c
Q = U x A x TD

Solar heat gain through glazing

Q = SHGF x A x SC x CFL

Ventilation load
Qs = 1.1 x CFM x TD
Ql = 0.68 x CFM x WD

8
Infiltration load
Qs = 1.1 x CFM x TD
Ql = 0.68 x CFM x WD

Occupants load:
Qs = qs x n x CLF
Ql = ql x n
Equipment load:
Qs = qs x n x CLF
Ql = ql x n

Lighting load:
Q = 3.4 x W x BF x CLF
9
8.2 Heating Load Calculations:

A) External Loads:

1) Conduction load through building envelope

2) Ventilation load
3) Infiltration load
