Nano Technology

This document provides an introduction to nanotechnology. It defines nanotechnology as the study and manipulation of matter at the nanoscale, or atomic level. Nanotechnology involves engineering structures sized 1 to 100 nanometers through techniques such as nanolithography. The document outlines some of the materials used in nanotechnology like zinc oxide, silver ions, aluminum silicate, and gold ions which provide properties like being dirt resistant or having healing properties. Applications of nanotechnology discussed include use in medicine for targeted drug delivery, electronics using nanowires, fabrics making clothing stain and dirt resistant, and use in defense, food, and space industries.

Questions
What is Nano?
A Nanometer is a unit of length in the metric system
equal to one-billion of a meter(10-9)

What is Technology?
Making, usage ,and knowledge of tools, machines and
techniques in order to solve a problem or perform a
specific function
The first ever concept was presented in 1959
by the famous professor of physics Dr.
RICHARD P.FEYNMAN .
Invention of the scanning tunneling
microscope in 1981 and the discovery of
fullerene (c60) in 1985 lead to the emergency
of nanotechnology .
The term Nano-technology had been coined
by NORIO TANIGACHI in 1974.
It refers to the constructing
and engineering of the
functional systems at very
micro level or we can say at
atomic level.

In most simpler way it is study of manipulating matter on an

atomic scale.
Zinc oxide:
Dirt repellant, hydrophobic & stain resistant.
Silver ion:
Healing property
Aluminum Silicate:
Scratch resistant
Gold ion:
Chip fabrication
Advantages
With Nano technology we can create unique materials and
products which are strong, lighter and most durable in nature.
Computers can become a billion times faster and million times
smaller.
Automatic pollution clean up.

Disadvantages
Carbon nanotubes could cause infection of lungs.
Oil and diamonds could become worthless.
Atomic weapons could be more accessible and destructive.
Medical Science:
Enable drugs to be delivered to precisely the right location in the
body and release drug doses on a predetermined schedule for
optional treatment.

Electronics:
The transistors are made of Nanowires, that are assembled on glass
or thin films of flexible plastic

Fabrics:
In manufacturing bulletproof jackets and Making spill and dirt
resistant , anti microbial , anti bacterial fabrics
Defence: Develop covert Nanomaterials for the
tracking, labeling, and authentication of high value
items

Food: Companies are developing Nanomaterials that

will make a difference not only in the taste of food, but
also in food safety, and the health benefits that food
delivers.

Space: Advancements in nanomaterials make

lightweight spacecraft and significantly reducing the
amount of rocket fuel required.these advances could
lower the cost of reaching orbit and traveling in space
