 Born on January 18, 1917 in Toronto, Jaques was educated at University
of Toronto and studied medicine at Johns Hopkins University.

 Before receiving his Ph.D in Social Relation from Harvard University.


During World War 2,he moved to England where he remained after the
war, studying under British psychoanalyst Melanie Klein. He was a
founding member of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relation .

 The concept of the Mild-life crisis was introduced by Jaques in 1965 used
in Western societies to describe a period of dramatic self-doubt that is felt
by some individuals in the "middle years" or middle age of life, His
development approach to organizational development makes him one of
the early contributors to Positive Adult Development.

 He died in Massachusetts in 2003.


 Jaques was a Canadian psychoanalyst and organizational
psychologist.
 He developed the notion of requisite organization, running
counter to many others in the field of organizational
development.
 Although he is most widely known for developing the
concept of 'social systems as defense against unconscious
anxiety'. Jaques ideas are still very influential in the
psychoanalytic study of organizations.
 Professor Jaques authored over 20 books and was the
originator of concepts such as corporate culture', 'mid-life
crisis', 'fair pay', 'maturation curves' and 'time span of
discretion'.
Theoretical Contributions
 Initiated the identification of the parts of an

accountability managerial hierarchy and the way in


which those parts interrelate.  This work is the
foundation required for any systems theory.
 The discovery of a universal system of organizational

layers, that provides a theoretical basis for the


appropriate number of layers for any given managerial
organization.
 Discovered the necessary and sufficient psychological

conditions for creating systems of accountable,


authoritative managerial leadership.
 Created role specific cross-functional working
relationships (accountabilities and authorities)
that integrate work processes across all work
systems.
 Recognized the importance of and provided for
sound and creative individual contributor roles
at all levels in the managerial hierarchy.
 Coined the term and first described the
psychological constructs of mid-life crisis.

 Awarded the Joint Staff Certificate of Appreciation


by General Colin Powell on behalf of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Armed Forces for “for
outstanding contributions in the field of military
leadership theory and instruction to all of the
service departments of the United States.”
 American Psychological Association, Division 13-
Consulting Psychology, Second Most Outstanding
Article: 2001, Diagnosing Sources of Managerial
Leadership   Problems for Research and Treatment
 Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatry.
Scholarship

 Received a B.A. Honors Science Degree from the University


of Toronto, an M.D. from Johns Hopkins Medical School, a
Ph.D. in Social Relations from Harvard, and qualification
as a psychoanalyst at the British Psychoanalytical Society.
 By invitation in 1964, he was invited as Head of School to
develop the first Interdisciplinary School of Social Sciences
at Brunel University in London, and its Research Institute
of Organizational Studies.
   Founding member of the Tavistock Institute of Human
Relations
 Appointed Lifetime Research Professor in Management
Science at George Washington University.
Military Service

 Served as a Major in the Canadian Army


during WWII
