Mode

The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. It can be used to identify whether any value occurs more than once. The document provides examples of finding the mode for both ungrouped and grouped numerical data. It defines terms like unimodal, bimodal, and multimodal to describe data sets with one, two, or more modes. An activity at the end asks the reader to find the mode of a data set provided in a table.

MODE

Jan Kristian Gatchalian

MODE OR MODAL VALUE

-a set of data values is the value

that appears most often
-Bimodal, Unimodal, Multimodal
ADVANTAGES

It is useful in counting the number of

times AN event occurs.
It helps in identifying whether any
event has occurred more than
once.
Mean, median, mode combined
together are very useful in dealing
with statistics problem.
EXAMPLE NO. 1 (UNGROUPED
DATA)

The size of shirts manufactured by

a tailor are as follows:

32, 33, 35, 39, 33, 37, 42, 33, 36.

Step 1

 Put the numbers in order:

32, 33, 33, 33, 35, 36, 36, 37, 39,

42, 42
Step 2

 Count how many times each

number appears. (This may be
easier if you put the numbers in a
column/row format)

32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 39, 42

ANSWER

32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 39, 42

33 36 42
33

The most common number is 33 in

this data set (it appears 3 times).
EXAMPLE NO. 2 (UNGROUPED
DATA)

32.4, 45.1, 76.3, 87.3,

90.2, 76.1, 15.9, 11.7,
10.3, 21. 9
Step 1

 Put the numbers in order:

32.4, 45.1, 76.3, 87.3, 90.2, 76.1,

15.9, 11.7, 10.3, 21. 9

10.3, 11.7, 15.9, 21.9, 32.4, 45.1,

76.1, 76.3, 87.3, 90.2
Step 2
 Count how many times each
number appears. (This may be
easier if you put the numbers in a
column/row format)

10.3, 11.7, 15.9, 21.9, 32.4, 45.1,

76.1, 76.3, 87.3, 90.2
1 1 1 1
UNIMODAL, BIMODAL,
MULTIMODAL

UNIMODAL – there is only 1

mode
BIMODAL – there are 2
modes
MULTIMODAL – there are 3 or
more modes
NO MODE
12, 45, 76, 90, 110, 256, 780
UNIMODE
20.5, 34, 49, 50.2, 108. 2, 108. 2, 632

GROUPED DATA

LBmo = Lower Boundary of the modal class

D1 = difference between the
frequencies of the modal class and
the next upper class
D2 = difference between the
frequencies of the modal class and
the next lower class
i = class interval
