Work Safety: By: Group 8

Let's start the role play about work safety. Mr. Shift: Hi Mr, how are you doing? I heard you just got a new job that requires night shifts. Congratulations! But you know night shifts can be bad for your health right? There was a new study about it. Mr: Oh really? I didn't know that. Tell me more about this study. Mr. Shift: Sure. The study found that working night shifts disrupts your body's natural circadian rhythm. Basically there are genes in our body that follow a 24 hour cycle - being active during the day and resting at night. But when you work at night, it throws off this cycle. They found over 1500 genes can get

PART A
“READING COMPREHENSION”

NIGHT WORK COULD DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH
A new study suggests working shifts at night can be damaging to
one’s health. In particular, it increases the risk of several cancers,
diabetes, mental illnesses, and various heart disease. Researchers from
the Sleep Research Centre at the U.K.’s University of Surrey
discovered that many genes in the body needed to follow a regular
24-hour cycle, during which the body sleeps at night. If this cycle is
broken, up to 1,500 genes could get damaged, eventually resulting in
potentially life-threatening diseases. Professor Derk-Jan Dijk said:
“The study has important implications because we now need to
discovered why these rhythms exist and think about the consequences
of that.”
The human body has around 24,000 genes. Many of these
switch off if the body does not follow a regular sleeping
pattern. This can cause parts of the immune system to
become less efficient, making us more susceptible to illnesses.
Study co-author Dr Simon Archer said : “Over 97 per cent of
rhythmic genes become out-of-sync with mistimed sleep,
which really explains why we feel so bad during jet lag or if
we have to work irregular shift. “Dr Dijk said that despite the
results of the research, it would be difficult for people to
change their lifestyles. He explained it was difficult for
society to function without people working night shifts, but
said people needed to understand the dangers and
“mitigate the impact”.
1. What did the study say about night shifts ?
A new study suggest working shift at night can be damaging to
one’s health.
2. What is most affected in the body when you don’t sleep at night?
In particular, it increases the risk of several cancers, diabetes,
mental illnesses, and various heart diseases.
3. What happens when you don’t follow regular sleeping pattern ?
If we don’t follow regular sleeping pattern up to 1,500 genes
could get damaged, eventually resulting in potentially life-
threatening diseases.
4. What should people do about this ?
Because many people can’t choose where they work, they
have to keep working , the only way to keep health is have
a good lifestyle, like exercise, consume healthy food,
consume vitamin.
5. What Professions are mostly at risks ?
Everyone working in the shift night must be a Nurse, police
and etc.

3. Healthy Diets 4. Regular Exercise

5. Regular Medical Check-up 6. Asking For A Rise

7. Requiring Health Insurance 8. Higher Salary for Night Shifts

C. Survey: how would you think each these items relate to work safety?
Put numbers in the rank column to indicate the highest possibilities.

No Objects Rank
1 Getting A New Job I =1
2 Having Some Food Supplement IIIII =5
3 Healthy Diets III =3
4 Regular Exercise IIIII I =6
5 Regular Medical Check-up IIIII IIIII IIIII =15
6 Asking For A Rise II =2
7 Requiring Health Insurance IIIII IIIII IIIII I = 16
8 Higher Salary For Night Shifts II =2
BASED ON THE THEORY
REQUIRING HEALTH
INSURANCE
The Occupational Safety and Health
Act of 1970 (OSHAct) declared that
every worker is entitled to safe and
healthful working conditions, and that
employers are responsible for work
being free from all recognized hazards.
(Silverstei, Michael : 2008)
REGULAR MEDICAL CHECK-UP
Medical Check Up (MCU) is a positive activity This is because
the health of workers affect the level of productivity of the
company and of course associated with profit company. (Rickic, D
Vesovic, S : 2013)
REGULAR EXERCISE
The most commonly used approach is
exercise therapy. Stretching provides
several benefits for people at work, and
may help improve morale and team
cohesiveness. (Gasibat, Qais : 2017)
So, from this survey of work safety we have 3 object is Requiring
Health Insurance, Regular Medical Check-Up and Regular Exercise.
This activity will have a positive impact on employees and company
if doing this.

ENJOY OUR VIDEO ABOUT WORK SAFETY
CONCLUSION
what do firefighters, pilice officers, doctors, nurses, paramedics,
and office cleaning staffhave in common ?

THEY ALL ARE AT RISK FOR SHIFT WORK

Shift workers also face potential health problem. But from interviews can be concluded that
doing regular exercise, consume good food and consume vitamins can avoit the risk of disase.
And doing general medical check up can help to know the condition of our body.

Ayu dina (25) she always hard working, she worked as a nurse. She said to be a nurse must
totality. He work with shift and night shift is one of the preferred. Sometimes she feel tired and
got headache. But she consume vitamins and always exercise. She was going to stay healthy.
PART E
“ESSAY”

EVI KURNIANTI (141.0043)

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WORKING AT
NIGHT??
A new study showed that working at night shift can be damaging to ones
health. A research from the sleep research centre at the U.K university of
survey discovered that many genes in the body need to follow a regular 24-
hour cycle. At the night, brain give the intstruction to the body to get a rest.
Inappropriate sleep pattern can cause stres, an irregular heartbeat, and
cardiovaskuler complication for people with a weak heart.
According to Bohle and Tilley (2002),
work with the shift system has an impact on
employees that can affect quality of life,
performance, and fatigue. The most
noticeable shift schedule shows this impact is
the night shift schedule. And according to
Aamont (1991) report on the results of
several surveys showing that night shifts
tend to cause disruption of body functions,
such as sleep disorders and digestive
problems.
At night the body burns oxygen and food to provide energy. In this condition the
catabolic level increases and is dominated by the hormone adrenaline and
corticosteroids. But during sleep at night the hormone system will move to the anabolic
stage where there is a transfer of energy for improvement and growth. At the anabolic
stage there is also a decrease in adrenal hormones and corticosteroids that are replaced
by growth hormones such as HGH, melantonin, FSH, testosterone.
In my opinion, during work at night has many negative impacts than positive, one of the
negative impact is the disturbance of sleep patterns because the time that we should use to get
rest is not used properly, so our sleep cycle being not regular.
Based on my suggestion, in indonesia especially in surabaya area should apply limitation
of working time, the working time that not recommended is above at 11.00 pm until 5.00 am.
Because at that time the body requires recovery and renewal of the reserve energy that is
owned because the body system will decrease at night. Another impacts of the night shift can
increase the number of the work accidents.
