Health Risk Due To Particulates, Dioxine & Furans

This document discusses the health risks of air pollution from particulates, dioxins, and furans. It notes that particulates can cause premature death and heart and lung problems. Dioxins and furans are toxic substances that form unintentionally during manufacturing processes and waste incineration. Exposure can occur through contaminated food, water, and air. Health effects include cancer, hormone changes, and skin diseases. Reducing these pollutants requires controlling combustion conditions, removing chlorine and metals, stronger enforcement of waste burning bans, and alternative waste handling methods like recycling to reduce incineration.

What is air pollution?
 The presence in or introduction into the
air of a substance which has harmful or
poisonous effects
Effects of Air pollution
 Respiratory and heart problems
 Global warming
 Acid Rain
 Eutrophication
 Effect on Wildlife
 Depletion of Ozone layer
What is particulates.
 Air pollutant that most commonly affects
people's health.
 particals (categorized)
big (2.5 and 10 micrometers)
small (less than 2.5 micrometers)
Where do particulates come
from?
1.Big particulates of between 2.5 and 10
micrometers. (P.m 10)
 Grinding of rocks and soil .
 Crushing of rocks
2. Small particulates of less than 2.5
micrometers .
 Driving automobiles.
 burning plants (brush fires and forest
fires or yard waste)
 Smelting and processing of metals.
Why should we be concerned by
particulates?
 PM 2.5, are small enough to pass from our lungs
to our bloodstream.
 can alter the body's defense systems against
foreign materials.
 damage lung tissues.
 aggravate existing respiratory and cardiovascular
disease.
 can lead to cancer.
Health risk due to paticulates.
 premature death in people with heart or
lung disease,
 nonfatal heart attacks,
 irregular heartbeat,
 aggravated asthma,
 decreased lung function
 increased respiratory symptoms, such
as irritation of the airways, coughing or
difficulty breathing.
How to reduce the propagation of
particulates.
 Construction zones try to wet the area
they are working in to avoid dust
propagation.
 Using a good catalytic converter in auto
vehicles and doing regular servicing.
 Factories should use good filters and
must do servicing regularly.
What are dioxins and furans?

Dioxins and furans is the abbreviated or short

name for a family of toxic substances that all
share a similar chemical structure. Dioxins, in
their purest form, look like crystals or a
colorless solid. Most dioxins and furans are
not man-made or produced intentionally, but
are created when other chemicals or products
are made. Of all of the dioxins and furans,
one, 2,3,7,8-tetrachloro-p-dibenzo-dioxin
(2,3,7,8 TCDD) is considered the most toxic.
How are they formed
How can dioxins and furans enter
and
leave your body
Dioxins and furans can enter your body
through breathing contaminated air,
drinking contaminated water or eating
contaminated food. About 90% of exposure
to dioxins and furans is from eating
contaminated food. Dioxins and furans can
build up in the fatty tissues of animals.
How can you be exposed to dioxins and
furans?
 You can be exposed to dioxins and furans by
eating contaminated food.
 Individuals who burn their household waste or
burn wood can be exposed as well. Even forest
fires can contribute to the creation of small
amounts of dioxins and furans
 municipal solid waste incinerator, copper
smelter, cement kiln or coal fired power plant
you can be exposed to dioxins and furans
What are the health effects of
exposure to
dioxins and furans?
 Causing Cancer
 people exposed to dioxins and furans
have experienced changes in hormone
levels
 caused a skin diseased called
chloracne.
How to reduce the propagation of
dioxin & furans
 Conditions that favor formation of dioxins
and furans immediately following
combustion must be prevented

by cooling them quickly from very high temperature to a lower

one

presence of certain metals known to facilitate dioxin and furan

formation on particulate matter should be minimized.
Install a gasification dissolution
furnace
 Use of chlorine-free processes and
products
 Stronger local enforcement of existing
restrictions on burning of trash and an
increase in public education

Such as:
Prohibit Residential wood burning
Precaution against Landfill fires
 Alternative waste handling methods,
such as recycling, composting, and thermolyses, reduce the need
for waste combustion and incineration, and therefore reduce the
potential for dioxin emissions from these sources.
 Reducing Personal Exposure
Conclusion
Human being care more about the money
and production than caring for the
environment.
