Atmosphere

The document discusses the layers of the Earth's atmosphere. It describes the five main layers - troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere - and provides some key details about each layer's composition, temperature, and altitude range. The troposphere is closest to Earth's surface and contains nearly all weather. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer and has little water vapor. The thermosphere is the hottest layer, reaching 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Atmosphere

Objectives:
 To know what is Atmosphere
 To know what are the compositions of the
Atmosphere
 To determine the different general
characteristics of the Atmosphere
Atmosphere
• An atmosphere (from Greek ἀτμός -
Atmos "vapor" and σφαῖρα - sphaira "sphere")
is a layer of gases that may surrounding the
planet earth that is retained by gravity.

• The atmosphere is made up of layers

surrounding the earth that holds the air we
breathe. In short, the atmosphere is the
protective bubble we live in.
Compositions of Atmosphere
Layers of the Atmosphere

 Troposphere
 Stratosphere
 Mesosphere
 Thermosphere
 Exosphere
Troposphere
• Closest to the surface of Earth, we have
the troposphere “Tropos” means
change.

• The troposphere starts at the Earth's

surface and extends 8 to 14.5 kilometers
high(5 to 9 miles). This part of the
atmosphere is the most dense. Almost all
weather is in this region.
• Air is warmest at the bottom of the
troposphere near ground level.

• Air pressure and the density of the air also

decrease with altitude.
• The layer immediately above the
troposphere is called the stratosphere.
The boundary between the troposphere
and the stratosphere is called the
"tropopause".
Stratosphere
• Above the troposphere and below the
mesosphere, we have the stratosphere.
Strat means “layer”.

• The stratosphere starts just above the

troposphere and extends to 50 kilometers
(31miles) high. The ozone layer, which
absorbs and scatters the solar ultraviolet
radiation, is in this layer.
• Ozone, an unusual type of oxygen
molecule that is relatively abundant in the
stratosphere, heats this layer as it absorbs
energy from incoming ultraviolet radiation
from the Sun.

• The stratosphere is very dry; air there

contains little water vapor.
• The lower boundary of the stratosphere
is called the tropopause; the upper
boundary is called the stratopause.
Mesosphere

• The mesosphere lies between the

thermosphere and stratosphere.

• “Meso” means middle.

• The mesosphere starts just above the
stratosphere and extends to 85 kilometers
(53miles) high. Meteors burn up in this
layer.

• The boundary between the mesosphere

and the thermosphere is called the
“mesopause".
Thermosphere

• The thermosphere lies between the

exosphere and mesosphere.

• “Thermo” means heat, and the

temperature in this layer can reach up to
4,500degrees Fahrenheit.
• The thermosphere starts just above the
mesosphere and extends to 600
kilometers(372 miles) high. Aurora and
satellites occur in this layer.
• The boundary between the thermosphere
and the exosphere above it is called the
thermopause.
Exosphere
• The outermost layer

• “Exo” means outside.

• This is the upper limit of our atmosphere.

It extends from the top of the
thermosphere up to 10,000 km (6,200
mi).
