Rhythm and Dynamics

What is Rhythm?
- a strong, regular, repeated
pattern of movement or sound.

- the systematic arrangement

of musical sounds, principally
according to duration and
periodic stress
What is beat?
- the beat is the basic unit of
time, the pulse (regularly
repeating event), of the mensural
level (or beat level). The beat is
often defined as the rhythm
listeners would tap their toes to
when listening to a piece of
music, or the numbers a musician
counts while performing
What is Tempo?
- Tempo. The speed at which your patterns play back is called the
tempo.
- Tempo is measured in beats per minute or BPM. So if we talk about
a piece of music being "at 120 BPM," we mean that there are 120 beats
(pulses) every minute.

Tempo:
• Fast, moderate, slow
• Accelerando
• Ritard or Ritardando
What is Dynamics?

- In music, the dynamics of a piece is the variation in

loudness/softness between notes or phrases.

Dynamics:
• Loud, soft
• Accent
• Crescendo
• Decrescendo
