WHAT IS
RHYTHM?
What is Rhythm?
• rhythm, in music, the placement of sounds in time. In its
most general sense, rhythm (Greek rhythmos, derived
from rhein, “to flow”) is an ordered alternation of
contrasting elements. The notion of rhythm also occurs in
other arts (e.g., poetry, painting, sculpture, and
architecture) as well as in nature (e.g., biological rhythms).
What is Rhythm?
• The best way to describe rhythm is as a controlled
movement of music in time. It may be related to
the division of music into regular metric portions,
distinguished from pulse, meter and beats of
music.
What is Rhythm?
• Rhythm is a pattern of regular or irregular pulses
which happen in music from strong and weak
melodic and harmonic beats. It is one of the
fundamental aspects of music theory. The way
music is divided into beats which repeat a specific
number of times in a bar at a certain speed/tempo
is considered as rhythm.
IMPORTANCE OF HAVING
GOOD RHYTHM
Importance of Having Good Rhythm
So, why does a good rhythm matter? Having a good rhythm enables
you to:
Stay in time with your band
You can play any rhythmic figure by ear
You can sight-read good rhythms
You won’t rush or drag the beat
Rhythm Patterns
The step is taken on the first beat
with an added tap (toe step),
brush step, kick or "hold" taken
on the second beat. Examples of
dances this is used are the Tango
and the Fox Trot. Double Rhythm.
This is two steps taken on two
beats of music, such as in
marching.
Duple metre
a musical metre characterized by a
primary division of 2 beats to the bar,
usually indicated by 2 and multiples or
6 and multiples in the upper figure of
the time signature, with, and being the
most common examples. Shown
below are a simple and a compound
duple drum pattern.
Triple Meter
also known as triple time) is a
musical metre characterized by
a primary division of 3 beats to
the bar
Quadruple Meter
plays two bars of 4/4 on a power
drum kit followed by two bars of 12/8.
The quadruple meter figure shows the
score. The first rhythm is simple
quadruple meter, 4/4, and the second
is compound quadruple meter, 12/8.
Quadruple meter is a meter with four
primary beats.
Rhythmic Timing
• refers to the ability to keep accurately to the regular beat and
synchronize with an ensemble.
Rhythmic Texture in Dance
• Textures are like dynamics and musical articulation in piano. They
accentuate the music and match the changes and flow of the
song, as well as add performance technique to a piece.Textures
can be staccato, sharp, fast and direct to the point. Or they can
be legato, smooth, and flow with the melody.

types and elements of rhythm
The concept of rhythm is very specific to music
theory. It describes the progression and patterns of
events that take place throughout a song. The other
elements of music are Dynamics, Form, Harmony,
Melody, Texture, Timbre, and Tonality. Rhythm is one
of those elements. Rhythm and these other musical
components must be properly understood in order for
music to be discussed and understood.
The arrangement of notes, silences (rests), and
intensity of a song's progression is referred to as
rhythm. Musical rhythm is concerned with the
repetition or recurrence of notes and silences in time,
as well as the length and intensity of these notes and
pauses. The term "rhythm" in music refers to repeated
runs of notes and pauses.
Music is distinguished not only by its rhythm. It permeates all
aspects of life. In a variety of creative fields, such as art, music,
poetry, design, and sports, rhythm is used to help people
understand some of their fundamental ideas. In general, rhythm
is consistent throughout. In any activity, event, work of art, or
design, there is always a pattern of occurrences. The elements of
music theory rhythm discussed in this article are what set it apart
from other disciplines.
ELEMENTS OF RHYTHM
• BEAT - The underlying pulse of a rhythm
• TEMPO - Rate of speed of a movement
• INTENSITY - Variation of stress of movement.
• PITCH - Lowness or highness of a tone
ELEMENTS OF RHYTHM
• ACCENT • Emphasis on certain beats
• METER • The regular recurrence of beats which divides a musical design into
measure
• PHRASE • Measures grouped together
• BAR • In music a vertical line across a staff dividing it into equal measures of time.
• COUNT • A pulse beat , a time limit.
ELEMENTS OF RHYTHM
• NOTE - A printed symbol of a musical tone
• MEASURE - A group of pulse beat
• NOTE PATTERN - Refers to a note or set of notes with or without rest used for a
certain dance step
• STEP PATTERN - Refers to the movement or movements done for each of the
dance step.
