Goal: To Describe The Structure and Function of The Muscular System

The muscular system consists of over 640 muscles throughout the body that are made of muscle and connective tissue. It has several key functions: 1. To create movement by working with bones, ligaments, and tendons. 2. To move food through the digestive system and blood through the body. 3. There are three main types of muscle: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle, each with different locations and functions. Tendons attach muscles to bones and allow muscles to pull on bones when contracting. Muscles often work in pairs with flexor and extensor muscles to enable smooth movement.

The Muscular System

Goal: To describe the structure and function of

the muscular system.
What is the
Muscular System?
• made up of over 640
different muscles

• consists of two
different types of
tissue:
• connective tissue
• muscle tissue
What are the 1. To create movement by
Functions of the working with bones,
Muscular System? ligaments, and tendons.
2. To move food through the
digestive system.
3. To move blood through the
body by pumping the heart.
4. To produce heat.
5. To provide protection to
inner organs.
1.Skeletal Muscle:
• Attached to the bones for movement.
Helps protect your inner organs.
2.Cardiac Muscle:
• Special type of muscle found only in
your heart. This type of muscle
causes your heart to beat.
3.Smooth Muscle:
• Lines your digestive tract and blood
vessels. Smooth muscle moves food
and blood through your body.
What are the 2 Different Types of
Muscle?
• Voluntary: • Involuntary
• Muscle action that is NOT
• Muscle action that is under under your control.
your control.
• Cardiac and smooth
• Most skeletal movement is
voluntary. muscle are involuntary.
• Examples: • Examples:
• Walking, talking, running, • Heart beating, food
writing, jumping, moving through the
stretching digestive tract, reflexes
(skeletal)

Skeletal muscle can be both voluntary and involuntary (reflexes).

• Tendons attach muscles to
bones.
What are • Tendons are made up of
Tendons? strands of flexible
connective tissue.
• When a muscle contracts
(gets shorter) the tendon
pulls on the bone.
• Muscles work in pairs to cause
smooth, controlled movements.
How do • Many of our basic movements are the
Muscles result of pairs of muscles bending and
straightening.
Work in • Flexor - a muscle that contracts to
Pairs? bend a part of the body.
• Extensor – a muscle that contracts to
straighten a part of the body.
Flexors and extensor
always work
opposite of one
another.
