Analysis of Heart Sound and Murmurs For Cardiac Disorder

This document discusses the design of a system to analyze heart sounds and detect cardiac disorders using an electronic stethoscope. It notes that auscultation depends highly on the listener's skills and training programs underestimate its value. The system aims to help physicians detect abnormalities earlier to reduce unnecessary referrals. It will involve a wireless electronic stethoscope connected to analysis software on a computer. The system design includes a transmitter with sensors and amplifiers and a receiver with a microcontroller, DAC and amplifier to play sounds. It will also classify different types of cardiac disorders.

Analysis of Heart

Sound and Murmurs

For Cardiac Disorder
Introduction

 Heart sound analysis by auscultation depend highly on the skills and

experience of the listener.
 Despite the importance of auscultation the internal medicine and
cardiology training programs underestimate the value of cardiac
auscultation and the new clinicians are not well trained in this field.
 It has been reported that extremely high percentages(as much as 87%)of
patients referred to cardiologist for evaluation have begin heart sound, So
a computer assisted system can help general physician in coming up to a
more accurate and reliable diagnosis at early stage and also can reduce
unnecessary referrals of patients to expert cardiologist at a distant
Technical feasibility
 Wireless connection between the stethoscope and computer is desirable for real time
processing and analysis of the collected signals.
 Wireless technologies are evolving rapidly hence the main challenge in this area is to
avoid unwanted interference by other electronic medical equipment.
 One of the features of this circuit is providing good sound quality for audible auscultation.
 Electronic stethoscope do not have to rely on the rubber tubing to transmit sound energy
from the chest-pieces to the ear-piece
 Connecting the two pieces together electrically can eliminate loss of sound energy and
reduction of signal quality due to tubing.
 It provides a diagnostic apparatus, which enables both the physician and the patient to
monitor the result of the examination in order to take quick action to treat the disease.
Problem definitions
 Usually, physicians use an acoustic stethoscope to detect abnormalities in the heart sound
and predict abnormal conditions of the human heart. As the frequency range and intensity of
heart sound is very low, doctors are facing problems while detecting the cardiac sound and
its abnormalities.
 If a precise diagnosis was to be made by the auscultated sounds, an extensive empirical
knowledge of various and diverse forms of auscultated sounds was necessary. Moreover, a
patient had to be examined closely over a long period of time.
 However, in practice, a physician had to see many patients each day, and the time the
physician had to spare for each patient was short, making it difficult, in many cases, to
diagnose the patient swiftly and accurately.
Problem definitions

 Due to improper diagnosis many patients spent unnecessarily long times before they made a
decision to be treated by a physician, losing, more often than not, an opportunity for an early and
effective treatment..
 To overcome the above-described disadvantages of conventional techniques for auscultation
and eradicate these severe problems, it is required to design and develop an electronic
stethoscope which would assist the doctor to analyze heart sound and to detect disease of the
heart.
 For further analysis of heart sound, A software tool to predict cardiac abnormalities interfaced
with electronic stethoscope.
 After performing de-nosing, prominent features and statistical parameters needed for disease
detection of heart sound are extracted using several algorithm.
System design
System design consists of two
parts that is transmitter and
receiver.
The proposed transmitter system
consists of the following hardware
components:
1) Front end circuitry – sensor,
preamplifier, filter and power
amplifier with variable gain 2)
microcontroller and zig-bee
module.

System design

The hardware design of receiver

consists of following parts:
Zig-bee module, microcontroller,
DAC, Power amplifier.
Zigbee module captures the
signal in the air and transmits to
microcontroller.
We have to play this signal on
receiver speaker phone. But received
signal is in digital form hence we
have to first convert it into analog.
Classification of Cardiac disorder
Problem statistics

 In India, CVDs are the leading

cause of death in both males and
females and in urban as well as
rural areas.
 In recent survey by Indian
council of Medical Research , the
Public Health Foundation of India
and Institute for Health Metric
and Evaluation 28% population
of India were cause to death due
to Cardiac disorder in India.
Market Survey

 The global stethoscope market size was valued at 21,955 million in 2016
and is expected to grow at 4.7% more over the forecast period.
 The global rise in cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, increasing
healthcare expenditure, and technological advancements such as
Bluetooth connectivity with digital wireless hearing aids for hearing aid
wearers using stethoscope and stethoscope apps on smartphones are
anticipated to drive the market growth.
 According to WHO, the world population aged 60 years and older is
expected to reach up to 2 billion by 2050 from 900 million in 2015. This is
expected to drive the market.
Market Survey
Global market
survey,2016
 Electronic stethoscope is capable
of connecting and amplifying 20
times the sound of the heart and
lungs, and removes undesirable
sounds.
 This can be attributed to the high
adoption of new technology, local
presence of major players, and
availability & introduction of
technologically advanced products
in various regions.
