1 - Composite Part Stresses Calculation KB

The document describes a 3-step procedure for calculating stresses in composite parts: 1) Calculate strains from total moments using composite properties. 2) Calculate stresses for each part using individual material properties. 3) Calculate member forces for each part by integrating stresses and ensuring compatibility between concrete and steel. For moving load analysis, part stresses may not match this procedure exactly as strains come from total moment rather than being compatible between materials. Instead, stresses are estimated directly from calculated part forces using beam bending equations.

Composite

Part Stresses
Calculation

Procedure for Composite Part Stress Calculation:

The procedure for calculation of stresses in composite section is as follows:

Step1: Calculation of Strain due to a moment applied to a composite section

Here the strains are linear and will be used for further calculations. At junction we assume strains to
be same for both deck and girder.

We calculate the strains from total moments using after composite properties.

Step2: Calculation of Stress for each part

Here the stresses for each part are calculated separately taking into consideration of change of E-modulus value.

Step3: Member force calculation for each part

The member forces (axial & moment) for each Part are calculated by integrating the stresses shown in the above
diagram.
Shear forces are not calculated for each part, as the shear flow pattern widely varies depending on the section
profile.
The member forces of each Part are calculated on the basis of compatibility of the concrete and steel girder.

If we are trying to check the composite stresses manually, then we need to back calculate the stresses from the
part moments but not from total moment.
This concept of part stresses and part moments is implemented in the program because different material prope
rties exist for composite section.

Part stresses for moving load analysis

In case of moving load analysis, part stresses will not match exactly with the procedure described above as the st

Developer reply

The stress of each part is estimated by forces of each part using same equation of a general beam stresses.
Forces of a part is calculated based on the moving load analysis.
Those has influence value and moving load analysis is used to calculate those results of moving load case.
Calculation of a part result in a static loadcase using material and sectional property can be possible.
However, a part result using the above procedure for a moving load case is not possible, because it is calculated
by influence line and moving load analysis. Maybe two results can be close, but it is not guaranteed.

The procedure for calculation of a part is below.

1) Estimation of curvature of total beam using material and equivalent sectional property.
2) Estimation of forces of a part using the curvature (1) and material and sectional property of a part
3) Estimation of stresses of a part using simple equation Bending stress = My * z / Iyy, My, z and Iyy are property
of a part.

Moving load analysis using influence values which are calculated by above procedure is used for a part forces an
d combined stresses.
