ESF - Level 1 - BIOS - v4-290110

The document provides an overview of the PowerEdge server BIOS and UEFI. It discusses that the BIOS is boot firmware that initializes hardware and prepares the system for software loading. It describes different BIOS keystrokes such as F2 for system setup, F11 for boot manager, and F12 for PXE boot. The document also introduces UEFI as the next-generation replacement for BIOS and compares features between BIOS and UEFI boot modes.

System BIOS

Dell Confidential
Objectives

After completing this module you will be

able to:

 Discuss the PowerEdge BIOS and their

functionality.
Overview

 What is BIOS?
– Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)

– Is boot firmware, designed to be the first

code executed on the system when
powered on.

– To identify, test, and initialize system

devices such as the video display, hard
disk, floppy disk, and other hardware.

– It also prepare the system for a know

state, so that software stored on
compatible media can be loaded,
executed, and given control of the system.
PowerEdge BIOS Keystrokes

 PowerEdge servers BIOS keystrokes varies depending on the generation of servers.

Keystroke Description 8th Gen 9th & 10th Gen 11th Gen

<F2> Enter System Setup

<F10> Enter Utility Partition

(if Utility Partition is
installed)
Enter System Services System Services will launch Unified
Server Configurator (USC).

<F11> Enter BIOS Boot F11 keystroke is not

Manager available in 8th gen
server.
Enter the BIOS Boot Manager or
the UEFI Boot Manager, depending
on the system’s boot
configuration.

<F12> Enter System PXE boot

during the Power On-Self Test (POST)
with keystrokes on the top right of the
screen.

 System Setup

system that have the Dell Utility
Partition installed.

 11th Gen Server System Services

 Press <F10> will launch Unified Server
Configurator (USC).
 Note: This NEW option is only available
from 11th Gen server onwards.

 PXE Boot
 Press <F12> will launch system PXE
boot screen that allows user to boot
from network adapter.
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

 What is UEFI?
 Interface specification between Operating System and
Platform Firmware.

 Provides architecture independent mechanism for add-

in card initialization.

 Provides a standard environment for booting an

operating system and running
pre-boot applications.

 Next-generation replacement for all legacy BIOS

platform.

 The primary goal of UEFI is to define an architecture

that can scale with time and to offer structured coding
environment allowing easy enablement of new
technology.
BIOS POST Flow

 Both the UEFI and legacy boot options are still available, as an effort not to disrupt the existing
legacy BIOS POST flow.

 Hence, an operating system that does not have the ability to understand the UEFI boot sector
can still be booted via the existing standard BIOS routine.

 Any UEFI compatible OS will leave the UEFI partition and use the UEFI loading sequence.

 Operating systems must be 64-bit UEFI-compatible to be installed from the UEFI boot mode.
– Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 x64
– Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64
– SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, release 11
– Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.7 and above
Enable UEFI in System Setup

 Power on the system, press <F2> to

enter the System BIOS.

 Highlight the Boot Setting listing and

press <Enter>

 Set the Boot Mode to UEFI

 Reboot the system and press <F11>

when you see the message “ <F11> =
UEFI Boot Manager”

 Once the Boot Mode is set, changing the

Boot Mode from BIOS to UEFI or vice
versa will require user to re-format & re-
install the OS.
